Dumoulin Mauser .505 Gibbs
      #197074 - 18/12/11 04:50 AM

This rifle is for sale in local gunshop. Asking 7 950 € . I havenīt shot it but made a "coldtest" and seems that the balance is quite bad, barrel much too heavy.

Way too many rifles made in 505 Gibbs turn out to be clubs due to heavy barrels.
The originals were not as while the barrels were thick where necessary, they were carefully tapered to give good balance

Good point, Phil. One I hadn't thought of previously.

I do recall seeing a .505 of "Old John", with the banded front sight and actually quite thin muzzle metal, now that you mention it.

"Old John" meaning John Buhmiller - he was a very nice man.

Because the people who build them don't understand how to build them to get the balance / feel right.

Correct, mine is a great lump of a thing with a huge stock - much bigger foreend than above with leather patch on the comb yet the gun does feel right.

I actually got to handle one of these a few years ago. before I got the chance to shoot it something broke and it was rendered inoperable. Something that WAS NOT mentioned in the test report and yes it was darned heavy and muzzle heavy if I recall. Oh yes there were also several misfires with the new Kynoch ammunition he had for the test.

Try here:-

Makes no sense to me but one of you chaps might figure our more.

Receivers
The A 2000 action mounted on DUMOULIN HERSTAL rifles stands out in that its strength and reliability provide superb functioning even under the most extreme conditions.

Its excellence lies in the selection of high quality steel and a very accurate production method in which every single part is checked and gauged after each machining operation in order to guarantee the strict tolerance levels required for precision rifle parts.

Moreover, upon completion, each action is sent to the Belgian Government Proof House where it is subject to further rigorous proof testing.
The world famous Liege Tower proofmark is then stamped onto the receiver, thereby guaranteeing the safety and quality of the product.

Armeria Concari, from what I have heard.

Hmmm the trigger mech and the bolt handle are different on the Armeria Concari. Just been comparing the photos.

I've looked at the "Systemauser Concari" and agree it's not the same action as what Dumoulin shows as their A2000. MAYBE the A2000LM.

Out of sheer curiosity I keep trying to figure out who makes the A2000, which is what one of my Empire Rifles is built on. Also the same action that was imported by Legacy Sports International for awhile, though Dumoulin supposedly put some additional work into their actions before using them or selling them to Empire.

As the king said:-

Tis a puzzlement.

Oh another point is that surely Dunmoulin claim it's a forged action.

these actions are made by dumoulin themselves ,,jim austin of (the now closed) new england arms of kittery point maine imported them into the states in the late 80,s they are heavy not well purportioned and ugly and at that time they might have been the only true magnum lenght action around outside of brno and some leftover brevex hereand there ...paul

Heavy and unwieldly large bore rifles like this one are one of the main reasons for the myth that double rifles handle so much better.

I was talking about heavy rifles. I have yet to see a heavy double rifle that handled anything like an H&H Royal or Purdey shotgun.

I'm having a Wichester m-71 turned into a 50 Alaskan. When I checked it in the white, I held the rifle at my side, with one hand under the action, and the muzzle aggressively sought out the floor (21" long). Since I was not looking for a buffalo (American Bison) rifle, I created my own contour and had that barrel recut to my lighter dimensions. I used the barrel weight calculator and an original .348 barrel to work out the dimensions. The barrel came out very close to calculated weight and the rifle is perfect now.

The barrel weight calculator is a powerful tool when specing out a custom job.
