470NE Duplicate Original Kynoch Load
      #196693 - 14/12/11 11:34 AM

I have an early Manton hammer rifle with original chambering 470NE, 500 grain bullet etc. I have tried a both slow and fast powders (H4831, IMR4064, H4350) with the 500gr Woodleigh and the gun shoots wide about 5" at 75yds with all of them, wider with the fast powders in fact (although this may be because I was a bit more conservative with the faster stuff) even at loads close to maximum. Can anyone suggest a load that closely duplicates the first Kynoch loading? Does primer choice make any difference? I have used CCI250 for all the testing so far.

Russ

Do you know what velocity they were doing ?

I owned one at one time, exactly the same but no load data at this stage.

They were built very strongly IMHO.

When I had a problem with the .450N.E. 3.25" that was regulated with Kynamco (Kynoch) the head guy "Little" said to read the book by Graeme Wright "Shooting the British Double Rifle" as he (GW) had done a lot of testing at Kynamco and close load replications are in his book.

Jeff

Agree.

I would say most of Graeme's load's would be close to Kynoch's, after all, most of the guns tested were old English.

The Manton I had was a ripper shooter, really accurate.
