20 Bore Rifle, for Whitetail & Black Bear?
      #196611 - 13/12/11 08:05 PM

Am currently looking at a 20 Bore double rifle, loaded for 2 1/2 drams of #6. Have yet to see the condition of the bores, but will post more information when available.

My question: does anyone have any experience with a 20 Bore loaded for similar? enough for whitetail and bear out to 100 yards?

Orvar-

I'm very much looking forward to seeing this rifle.
My Purdey is built for that exact load - but I have not shot black bear or whitetail with it.

I wouldn't hesitate on either, but I can't imagine taking black bear at such a long distance. I typically interact with them at much closer range.

Where did you find this rifle?

Cheers

2 1/2 drams of Curtis and Harvey's #6 sporting rifle powder would be equibalent to 2 1/2 drams (68gr. of Swiss 3F) or about 3 drams(82gr.) of GOEX 3F.

Not sure what the bullet or ball weight would be, but it would be slow. With around ball of 300 to 320gr., it might make 1,325fps and of course, less if a conical.

I would not call it a 100yard bear load, but much depends on the bear and accuracy of the load.
