I didn't say that. I said 3 inches was not very good.

Nothing wrong with 40 mm at a hundred metres.

Here is an another MERKEL 5E, sold 2006 in Widforss auction in Stockholm.

This is nothing but a pre-wall East German rifle that was called Merkel mod 140E-1 after the wall fell, and they were then available for USA import! I have one of these rifles, and I consider it a better rifle than the new mod 141.

The 140E-1 ("E" standing for ejectors) is built on a 20 ga size A&D action, and weighes in at 8.3 pounds with 24 inch barrels and is fixed regulation shoe-lump barrels. It comes from the maker with Auto safety, full rib with standing blade on the rear, and a patridge front sight with a brass face.

The newer mod 141 is based on a 28 ga size action, and the barrels are very thin, and just under 23 inches, and are mono-block barrels. IMO, the 141b is too light, but that is simply my opinion, and may suit other well. This rifle has adjustable regulation, a feature I do not like.

Both rifles are good rifles and are quite durable firearms. I much prefere the older mod 140E-1(mod 5) that is no longer made. If the rifle you are looking at has no problems it will serve you well, and is a better rifle IMO, than the 141!

Cheers dugaboy, however I have decided to save up a little more for either a Heym 88B, a Verney-carron, or a Demas Azur. Being a links shooter used guns are hard to come by. Feel free to shout out if you see any!

I agree. I much prefer the older, full size rifle to the newer, whippy model. I would be glad to own the former, but would turn down the latter. JMHO YMMV!
