A german driven hunt
      #195934 - 06/12/11 09:45 PM

This weekend I was on a driven hunt in Germany. The last years I have been invited to this hunt. The area is located in former east Germany, in a agricultural landscape. We hunt on 175 ha forest land for 2,5 h. This year the result wasnīt as good as the last years. We only shot 48 games!!! In the past it has always been more than 50. It is a great hunt, you hear shots all the time. Dogs barking. Animals running on all sides around you. Fast running Wildboars with dogs rather close after them. Fallow deers tight in groups. Roe deers jumping and seldom stay still. Itīs great!!! We did shoot 18 Wildboars, 18 Roe deers, 9 Fallow, 1 Hare, 1 Fox and 1 Raccondog. I did use my DR in 9,3x74R which is perfect for this sort of hunt. Afterwards itīs all German hunting tradition, Horn blowing, the animals put up in lines of rank, first Fallow, then Wildboar, Roedeer and Hare, Fox and Raccondog outside because they donīt belong in the line. We get soup and sausage and a fire is burning. In the evening we have a hunting dinner, this year it was a Geese dinner with plenty of beer. Itīs a long drive for a 2,5 hour hunt, 800 km and two ferrys. But as I have heard from some of the Australian friends, that’s nothing to complain about!

Thanks for sharing.

Are the numbers reducing through hunting or was it just not a good day ?.

Amazing!!!! I love reading about these European hunts.

I own 545 acres and we had a total of 7 deer living on it. Tough, mountainous country with deep snows and with a wide range of large predators = low game numbers.

Thanks very much for posting.

Are these short wheel base 4WD's Landrovers or Mercedes?

I love these. We don't see them in Oz.

I need someone to teach me how to blow one of these one day. I have one and am completely inept with it.

Long way for 2 1/2 hours but still an experience to enjoy.

He he, I would travel 9000 kms to shoot at one.

Had an acquaintance in Eastern Germany with more than one revier and he had too many boar on them, and they needed reducing too. Was supposed one day to go over for a swap hunt for the hunt I took him on over here, but decided not to follow it up for some reasons.

Staffan,

How difficult are the running shots? Some of the driven boar DVD's I've seen the boar are moving quite fast. Never been a great running game shot myself. How far away are the animals from your stand?

Thanks for posting. Enjoyed the short story and photos a lot.

Fatboy, 48 is very good, but the years before we have shot between 55-60. This year we were not allowed to shoot on running Roe, to many bad shots. This is a very good hunt.

John, it's an old army Mercedes, yes it would be nice own one like that. You need to shoot on running Boars. Most often they are on 40-50 meters. In the dvds it looks like they are on longer distance, but proberly 30-50 meters. Above 80-100 your chances to do a bad shot increases. I can recommend Wild boar fever 3 with Frans Albrecht, he can really make ā good hit on running Wild boar, but it is not that long distance as it looks.

/Staffan

A mate has the commercial cabrio model of 85. With 3 diff locks!

Currently replacing the ADF Landrovers. Saw a few "cammed up" on a flatbed at Puckapunyal last week.

Thanks Staffan. Unfortunately even the SWB Landrovers aren't even imported into Aust. At least never on the catalogues, website etc.

Its great to join in on hunts elsewhere, if invited and one gets a chance. Not just for the hunt, trophies, whatever, but just for the experience, and sharing others hunting cultures.

Whether in Europe, North America, Australia, Asia or Africa. Anywhere.

Yes, nice meeting new people and experience new things, different food. And my experience is that most people are very nice. Maybe get a chance hunting something. /S

Sville,

Waidmannsheil!

I would like to take part in such a hunt some day. The following of the European hunting traditions makes it very special.

Regards,

Buchseman
