Color hardening
      #195083 - 28/11/11 09:48 AM

Hi Guys,

Does anyone know a gunmaker in the UK that can do nice color hardening.
I mean the type that H&H use for example. Not the harsh, over bright colors.

Kind regards,

Hubert

Ray St. Ledger; Birmingham, England ?

Also, I thought the colours were determined by the steel, coke used, packing, length of time etc etc.

ie H&H type versus Rigby type of CCH ?

This is the H&H kind I meant:

This is the other kind:

It'll probably wear off in time to produce the colours we know of vintage guns, but who knows? We don't now what they looked like when new.

Hubert

Rigby seemed to have that Grey / deep Red look to their CCH.

I do like the H&H CCH.

I think you are right about the method and the colour that produces it. Originally some used ivory in stead of bone dust. People who can produce colours like that will probably keep the recepy to themselves, which is understandable.
I just would like to find someone who can do the soft brown/blue colours.

Kind regards,

Hubert

Enough absolute original guns survive to know what they looked like new.

I would at least start by asking the gunsmiths /old gunshops in the UK or even look up Ray St. Ledger; Birmingham, England.

Thank you for that.
I found them and will give them a call tomorrow.
