Went for a quick drive in the hills yesterday evening, had a half hour to kill.

WISH I had my camera with, have to carry it all the time.

Sighted first some parrots hanging onto wheat stalks in a crop, looked real cool.

Then some big red roos in a vineyard, squatting down in the first row. Looked good under the vines on the fresh green grass. See greys in the vineyards sometimes, but never reds.

Then a hare. Later a huge buck hare. Didn't see any deer though, they are harder to spot in that area.

Usually see next to nothing at times like this, but that evening was perfect, cool evening, after some rain.

Just shows, its essential to have a camera with to catch the shots.

Lest the forum's OS members consider roos as "cute and cuddly" they (especially dominant males)are capable of inflicting serious injuries on humans (of both sexes) and dogs. These includes disembowellment and drowning.

Be warned.

After roo shooting for the box for years all I can see is a $50 bill.
Just put the cross hairs on the white of his nose.

Speaking of which, has anyone seen the anti roo-shooting ads on TV.

Appealing to the bleeding hearts. Saying that joeys are being bludgened to death or decapitated.

Calling it the worlds biggest wildlife slaughter or some such bloody thing.

They don't seem to understand (or want to understand) that there are more roos around now then there ever have been. What with all the man made water supplies.

I shot them 20+ years ago, out in Brewarrina, and made a good lot of money from it. There were about 20 other shooters all doing the same, with no sign of them being shot out.

You do your best to shoot bucks, but sometimes the does had to be taken. You tried to make sure there was no joey in the pouch, but a small embryo couldn't be seen. This was unfortunate, but it happens. The joey was then dispatched as quickly and humanely as possible. Can't say I ever decapitated one, or even had the inclination to.

Sorry about the crappy pics.

This is a scan from an enlargement. I can't find the original, and the enlargement was done when colour copying was in it's infancy. This is my roo truck in about 1990. The ones with the tail still on in the rack are for Human Consumption. The ones on the outside are too big for HC and are going to pet food. No gal racks in those days.

These two show that I was subjected to the "cruelty" (according to the bambyites) from an early age. This was about 1979-80.
Wasn't I cute??

This one a year or two later

One only has to be in outback Oz towns in daylight hours to see the amount of roo trucks in town.
Its just part of life...no different to the log trucks in the timber towns.

There are 84 registered roo shooters in St George alone.

You only have to look at my three cars to see the amount of roo's here (all have roo damage)because I do a lot of night driving.

H.S.
As you would know I could make a weeks wages in 1 to 2 big nights.
By the end of it I was sick of it as it become a job and I didn't fire a shot for two years as I was over it and took up fishing.

Happy to say I'm back now.!!!!!!!!!!!!

That roo looks like he could kick Mike Tyson's butt when he was in his prime.

He probably could. They give a damn good wallop when they rear up on their tail and kick.

Just how big is that dude?

We don't have roos here in Nevada - I'd trip balls if I saw one of those on my hill...

tinker

Not sure how tall he is but I have seen big one's (Red Bucks full of muscle like this one) easily over 6 foot.

I remember many years ago at Booligal in NSW which was a haven for pig hunters in those days, the whole paddock was moving with roo's, good feed on that paddock compared to the surrounding area). Anyway, drove up to the gate, 2 Big red bucks standing out in the paddock, both were over 6 ft easily.

I'm 6'3" and I've had a few taller than me at full height. Don't underestimate them especially around women.

I wouldnt consider the roo as a giant by any means, just a good ol `roo. I have rolled a few monsters in my time on permit. They get very big in Vic as there is no commercial shooting, only pest permits.
