Hi

I have the posibillity to by a C. Lancaster C grade in cal. 450/400 3 1/4". Condition is good, but not excellent and the guy that have it, want to have about 10 000 USD for it.

What is your general opinion about a rifle like this?

I don't know if I shall wait and see if I can find another rifle ( wich could take long time)?
For the moment I have problem to decide what to do!

Sven

Check the proof marks just to make sure it is what it ways it is - and that it is a Nitro proofed gun.

C Grade as in ????

What type of action is it ? (If you know).
It might determine who made it.

I had a Sidelock wrist breaker C. Lancaster in 450/400 3 1/4".

Generally Lancs were good guns.

It's nitro proofed, and the action is of type boxlock. Length of barrel is about 70 cm and the balance is very good, will I say.

I suppose this C grade has to do with the action.

C Grade - yes, likely referring to the action or amount of engraving.

Rigby had C Grade actions - all they were were Webley and Scott actions with less engraving - well, mine is anyway but like everything in the British gun trade, their are exceptions.

Sounds like a reasonably good buy.

Is it an ejector ?

Do you know if the action is a Webley and Scott Screw Grip action (or PHV-1) ?

Important question
Why are you thinking of waiting for another rifle ?

If this suits your needs / wants / requirements, go for it.
These type of things are few and far between.

If you are waiting for a bargain, keep waiting because all those I have known who wait for a bargain rarely find it while prices just keep going up.

No, I am not waiting for a bargain. I just want know litle bit more before decide, and it always good to other opinions.
Of course I had prefered if it had been a sidelock, but then it most probably been another price.

But as you say, there is not so many of these!

No it's not an ejector gun and I don't know if it's a Webley and Scott action. I have to check this!

OK,

1. Nothing wrong with a Box lock

2. You wouldn't want a Sidelock Lancaster (Wrist Breaker) as most people think they are hard to close. re price, you are correct, my old Sidelock Lancaster (Wrist Breaker) is for sale in the US - I think on Champlin's web site.

Their is an OLD thread on the gun on another forum where someone asked a question about it and I recognised the gun so replied.

3. Get or Take some photos and post them up here - it is so much easier to give an opinion with photos and with today's technology - digital cameras and mobiles with phones in them, it should be easy.

I will try to get some photos, and see if I can manage to post them on this forum.

I didn't know that about the Lancaster sidelocks. Was this special for just Lancaster, or is it the same for the other "best gun" makers also?

I have already decide to buy it, but as I said it's always intresting to have a some more opinions.

It would have been intresting to know litle bit more about what this grade C, means. I have seen other Lancaster's on this forum, both B and C grade, and it is hard to see from just the engraving wich is the one.

Anyway, thanks for the adwise!!

I "believe" the Lancaster "Wrister breaker" - not it's real name but was it was commonly referred to - was a Lancaster invention.

By way of design - I believe due to the compression of springs on closing but hopefully someone else can give a better technical description - they are hard to close (for some people.

very similar to closing a Purdey shotgun. Self pening is great until you have to close it. However, that's what you have a loader for !!! LOL

My old Lancaster gun is here
http://www.gunsinternational.com/LANCAST...un_id=100163729

Although he doesn't show the case that I cased it in with all the accessories.

Jim, the US owner took Lion, Buffalo and Elephant with it
- and probably some others. He is a member on here so he might jump in if he sees it.
