Krieghoff Classic Big Five .450/.400 NE - 3" feat. Merkel9,3
      #193641 - 12/11/11 05:59 AM

Hey Guys - just back from the range - had pleasure to welcome a friend with his K-gun in .450/.400 NE...

Got a call by a friend of mine that is a regular client at Brooklands in Save - after a decade of hunting Buffalo with a single shot 9,3x74R he pulled one off and got a said weapon. Anyway - lacking a range he asked me if I could accommodate him for a shot or two.

Plain Jane - clear and simple with a niice wood - the first impression was - Man She is heavy!!!

No wonder - look at them barrels

Still - the balance was nice, rifle felt compact. Regardless I am lefty - rifle fitted me great - sights (gold bead and a single fixed leaf) aligned asap...

We burned some 400 gr. Labor für Ballistik softs

Now bare with me guys please - the biggest I ever shot was a .458 Win in M70 back in 2006...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZfXpt8e9oU

Followed with acouple of 286gr with my Merkel 140 in 9,3x74R:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=voE_GGRh8U4

Regardles the spooky weird stream of smoke going over my head at 2nd shot with a .400 (gas leak?) and a noticable difference before fly...

...one can't tell them apart at business end (wonder if Buff can)

Now the dust has settled - I can't believe what I am about to say - being a true Medium Bore Guy - I am sick, sick of feeling great about the kind recoil .400 gives...and all I know is that I want SOME MORE!

That's a nice looking double and .400 is one sweet calibre alright. :-)

Now it's time to step up to a 450 or 500 to get the recoil thrill! It's an addiction! But so much fun!

Mike I had no idea that recoil could be so much fun...just comparing 9,3 and .400...since 9,3 weighs 3 punds less, recoil is stil shallower tho sharper + it has a hogback stock and you get a certain smack in the cheek that is noticable at the range only...while with .400 recoil is deeper and stronger still slower but not even near of nasty or unbearable...so yes I will be looking to get me a 500 grainer shooter to try first from now on.

I've found my upper limit already.
A full loading of a 600 NE with a 900 grain Woodie in a 10 pound rifle! It rocked my world.. Lighter loads are do-able though. 5744 and cast bullets work fine.

BTW! I'm 'next door' to you now. I'm in Ukraine til Dec 1!!!

Better be careful...all that recoil addiction is expensive...

Hard on the shoulder cartilage, too. Mine's shot/gone/kaput. Used to be a time I'd shoot anything- love the 'punch!".

Almost at the top was 2,050fps with 500gr. Hornady's from a 5 1/2 pound #3 in .45/70. Shot 20 rounds of those offhand with it, one after the other as fast as I could load and shoot. Stupid! The .505 Barnes Supreme with 600gr. Barnes at 2,600fps was the top of my single punishment days. That and 15,000 rounds of .458 finished what I'd started - I thought it was fun.

I'm smarter these days, although permanently injured.

I suggest finding a rifle/ctg. you can shoot comfortably that will do the job and stay away from the ones that can permanently unjure you, or your pull your retinas out.

A descent weight .450/400 is probably perfect.

93mouse,

I think your friend will enjoy that rifle a lot!

And the calibre too is a great choice.

I like the rifle and its looks, clean and sleek.

Yeah a buff will certainly feel the difference between the 9.3 and a .400 but both will kill them no doubt.

You mention it felt heavy when first picked up. They always do, but what is the Krieghoff's weight? Thanks.

Eish Daryl - that is some heavy pounding...not intend to go that far (I guess), atm it looks to me like a strong liquor - just couple of shots/day, not a wild all night party

John I believe the weight is 10.5 lbs (4,8 KG). Could defenitely loose a pound or two, to be somewhere between 9.5 and 10?

I have looked at them several times while attending SCI in Reno..

They are in the 10.5 lb range---which is about perfect, IMHO, for a 500 Nitro which is the caliber I was looking at...

I think that rifle in .450 would be about perfect.

Great article, thanks - I am a big 450/400 fan and proud owner of a J. Wilkes in the calibre (pics on here somewhere).

Happy New Year to all.......

That's a nice looking rifle. I guess I'm not a traditionalist when it comes to doubles as I like the cocking system on the K-Guns. I like the safety aspect of carrying an uncocked rifle as opposed to a cocked but safetied rifle. Many will disagree with me on this one and I understand their line of thinking.

For that matter, I also like the Kreighoff offering of the 500/416 cartridge which is also non-traditional.

HP

I agree. I have not minded the Krieghoff's I have handled.

I too don't mind the decocker, and also think it allows a DR rifle to be carried loaded more safely but also ready for use.

And I too am interested in the .500/416 cartridge, though waver between a .400 3" and the .500/416. I can be indecisive until I actually buy one or the either one day.
