Arnhem-Land Boars
      #19342 - 21/09/04 10:50 PM

Just posted this on AHN:

Took a couple of mates from 'down south' out to Arnhem Land last weekend, walking up some of the creeks out from the Stone Country. We all bagged good boars, jumping them from their beds under the overhanging banks and shooting them on the run. Marvellous fun!
As usual, the newbie made a pig of himself and bagged three trophy hogs!

On the Saturday, I was lucky enough to be in the right spot to get a bead on the largest boar, well over 100 kilos and fairly spectacular in the tusk department. The shot caught him in the right ham as he topped the creek bank, and the bullet was later recovered during removal of the jaw. The 400-grain Woodleigh from my Jeffery .400 double was found in the left cheek-muscle after breaking the jawbone. It was fully expanded well back past the base, having penetrated some 1.3 metres end-to-end, but still weighed 390 grains! That's 97.5 percent! Love those Woodleigh Weldcores!

I'll toss up the full story with more pics when I get time.
Cheers.

Well done Tony.Great set of fangs.

Whilst in Arnhem did you see any signs of toads or animals that died for no apparent reason ?

Mate, cane toads everywhere! Very disappointing.
At one point, we were relieving a recently deceased boar of his ivory beside a wallow, and noticed about 30 toadlets per square metre in the area surrounding the wallow. They were recently emerged from the water, about 15mm long. ...and this in the middle of the dry season!
At least its safe to walk around the floodplain at night in bare feet now, the death adders are all dead!

Tony

Nice piggie! I didn't see any like that when up there but did see some pigs at the Mataranka hot springs only a few metres from swimming tourists. Got some photos. Will have see how they turned out.

Love that Jeffrey .400 of yours.
