I know this is a longshot, but does anyone know a source for the original Mauser scope rings that match the factory installed claw mount bases? How about period rings (Akah?) that work or, better still, modern copies that will work? I have been through the Recknagel catalog but didn't see anything promising. Emails to them have gone unanswered.
I am always running across original Oberndorf sporters that have the bases, but no rings. If it's a $1500 custom proposition to add the rings, it makes the rifles a lot less appealing.
many thanks

It is nearly useless looking for mounting rings that will fit to given bases.
Though the mounting parts all look alike they differ in details, because they were individually fitted together and moreover fitted to the scope.
So if you will use the period correct claw mount, the easiest way is to replace the front base together with a prefitted front ring ( Recknagel, EAW , MAK Kilic ) and for the back base - square bridge mounting system and the normal Suhl type require the same procedure- milling the foot out of the raw part ring base which are produced by the same companies.

I have had rings fitted to claw mount bases on two drillings, a Mauser Type S sporter and a Mannlicher carbine by New England Custom Guns. http://www.newenglandcustomgun.com/
They are made, I believe, by Recknagel and have proven to be entirely satisfactory.

Xausa, many thanks - that is very useful. I'll drop them a note with a photo of the bases and see what they can do.

mckinney: Check out www.clawmounts.com and you will find what your looking for. They make reproductions of original factory Mauser rings and bases.
