Wanna buy a buffalo trophy?
      #193020 - 04/11/11 10:28 PM

From a facebook page:

" This is the buffalo for R62000. The photograph was taken in 2009. Price is negotiable. "

You can buy THIS PARTICULAR buffalo ... now that sounds like a real challenging hunt ....

If you thought that was a lot, the following will make your head explode...

New heights reached at 2011 Thaba Tholo auction
September 2011

On 21 September, Thabazimbi in Limpopo province was a hub of excitement as it played host to the 2011 Thaba Tholo animal auction.

The Etana Wildlife and Tourism team was on hand to provide the necessary insurance cover for the auctioning process that took place.

"For these events the Etana Wildlife and Tourism product line provides a cover path for clients," mentions Joan Jackson, who heads this team. "We insure the animals from the time they are captured, kept within a boma facility, transported and located at the auction house, and handed over to the buyer. We also provide 14days cover following step-off."

At this year's auction the main attraction was the auction of a highly prized buffalo bull. Going by the name Senatla, this nine-year-old possesses impressive traits, and rangers and experts in the field remarked that he is an exceptional breeding bull in terms of pedigree.

"At previous events, bids for animals have surpassed the million rand mark," says Joan. "This showcases the interest in this industry and how business is thriving. At the 2010 Thaba Tholo auction the highest sale was an impressive R9-million. This year was simply incredible. Senatla's final selling price was R18-million, a new record at any auction."

These events created a general excitement among all who attended the auction. The wildlife and tourism industry is a vibrant one, and wildlife such as Senatla the record-breaking buffalo bull highlight the potential.

Etana Wildlife and Tourism valued the event as an opportunity to gain further understanding of the amount individuals will spend at auctions to secure highly sought-after animals.

Source: etana.co.za

NOTE: The above mentioned record selling bull has a spread of 50 inches, and has massive bosses. But, IIRC, the genes for the horns are passed on by the females.

My comment is not on price. It is an outfitter whom posts on the net, the photo of the "wild" buffalo you will be "buying" for your "hunt".

Sorry John. Didn't mean to hijack your thread. The outfitter posting that hunt offer must be rather scurilous to promote a cape buffalo "hunt" that can be completed in one day.

This type of hunting really Pi##es me off. It is outfitter like this that gives all the outfitters in RSA a bad name. There are only a few of these type of guys, who is in it for a quick buck. They do tremendous damage to our hunting industry, except for guarantees, unethical hunting practices and bullshitting their clients, they also gives the anti's a lot of ammo against hunting.

Hunting is about fair chase. I will bet my left ***** that the animals are kept in a very small camp or the Buff is sedated the day before the client arrives, I can be wrong, but I don't think so.

I just wish that clients will see through this and stop booking with this type of outfitter.

Often the same sort of client matches the outfitter in these cases.

I am afraid this isn't even a consideration, at least in my mind. I cannot believe that anyone cannot see through this - there are people who have a trophy rooms with phony heads - perhaps the 'start' of just such a 'venture'.

One day? One hour would be more like it, the rest being patted on the back, giving out tips, drinking a few sundowners and partaking in the usual wonderful AFTER HUNT BS

This is where the problem is. Demand creates supply, not the other way around.

If the record book keepers tightened up on how entrys are made then this sought of selling would vanish. So would a lot of jobs and income as well. A vicious circle. In a free market, ultimately it is up to the purchaser to be able to say whether what they have done is ethical or not and for their peers to set the standards. Well, we can see the standards that too many find acceptable.

Exactly, tophet1. Supply and demand says it all. When an uncrupulous 'trophy' collector can buy a 9 foot grizzly hide from a crooked taxidermist, right out from under the hunter who actually shot it - something is terribly wrong.

you mention Record books.

I am sure a fair few end up in them but I would say a lot more don't.

If I or anyone just wants to shoot something, fine, but to claim it as anything with the words Trophy or hunt in it is a joke.

Walking through the bush hunting is half the fun anyway.

If one of us 'bought the buffalo" and then drove in with a tranquilizer and a cattle truck what do you think the outfitter would say???

When I was hunting in Zimbabwe in 1994, there was live game capture operations going on, on the property. Choppers chasing game and driving them into V shaped bomas.

A couple of "trophy" eland were driven into the yards of the boma, and weren't wanted. They were going to be shot as they were in the way.

I was offered one as a trophy eland.

Would have been very easy.

I declined.

On the second to last day we bumped into a herd of eland. Tracked them and jogged after them for probably five kilometres. Then a successful stalk and shot on a nice 35" bull.

Enjoyed that hunt immensely and remember it fondly. Instead of shame and personal disgust had I shot it in a boma.

Really goes with saying, doesn't it.

That sort of thing is often said, especially on forums run by broken down hack keyboard "hunters".

However I think, if one feels shame about one did, needs to lie about it and how it was done and invent fictional hero stories, doctors the photos to remove the high fence, the stock yards, the chopper behind, then that hunter has already answered the truth about those sort of "hunts".

We all know how it is done. The tahr is shot in a pen. A chopper flies it and the client without a spot of dirt on their clothing, if a female, perfect hair and make-up, grinning proudly beside the tahr up on a mountain somewhere. (ie or male, just no make up). Or the beast is shot out of the door of the chopper.

Only ever saw one Kiwi chopper "hunt" where the client was either open enough, or stupid enough, to pose with the chopper behind him. He shot the animal from the chopper, then posed with the chamois (or whatever it was) with the chopper behind. He copped it bigtime. Poor honest guy!

If one is culling pests, eg pigs, donkeys, whatever really, out of a chopper door, well that might be just good fun, but please don't call it hunting, or any animal a hunting "trophy".

John

Yep, agree.

I have a heap of Buffalo Horns out the back porch of my place.

I know which were "hunted" and which were "shot" as part of a culling operation. I view them differently.

I have no problem shooting animals but I do have a problem with them ending up in record books.

How do we make others live by this simple ethical code though to prevent this kind of behaviour?

Maybe it comes down to us educating the young and taking more interested guys out and putting in the effort that way?

Cinghiale

People will do what people can get away with ... just part of human nature.

But you are right, in that educating the next generation in respect and ethics (not just hunting) is always the way to go.

As I have said several times on the net, I once wondered where I personally go my own "mindset", especially being close to 100% self taught a lot of things, especially hunting and shooting, and one day realised my sporting hunting attitudes came from the writings of "Bwana Samaki" ie Murray Mitchell, and his columns in the old "Shooters Journal".

It is good for the young to learn from the "elders" of the "tribe".

Supposedly the sale is for breeding purposes. For that price I would hope so.

50", hey, not small.
