New to me...a 1950?
      #192798 - 30/10/11 10:58 PM

I just bought a 1950 rifle in .270,nice clean with a G&H side mount. It had a Weaver 4X,now wears a Leupold 6X42 and all's well. However, looking over the proof date,I discover a complete date of 01.17.50 and it has no side safety? A wing on the bolt only? Is this really that early, that they had not made a side safety yet? The rifle is original, about 85 to 90%...

1950s still had clip guides on the receiver "bridge", a straight bolt handle and no additional side or tang safety. These features were only added post-1952.

I have recently mounted a scope on my 1903 carbine, but it interferes with the flag safety. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how this problem can be remedied? Has anyone ever modified a Mannlicher safety using parts from a Buehler low scope Mauser safety? It looks as though it might be possible.

I know of a 1903 with a Nickel scope in claw mounts that had that problem. The owner moved the scope forward about .5 in., allowing the flag safety to just clear the retainer ring and the ocular bell. There isn't a lot of clearance, but there is enough to allow the safety to be manipulated (using the right index finger).

I do not think a Buehler safety will work. Frank DeHaas shows an altered safety for a 1903 on page 108 of his book Bolt Action Rifles - Revised Ed.. The flag is basically inverted and extends back over the striker retainer nut.

The flag on mine is now blocked by the Leupold scope, that I switched out.I may look into some other optics,if not I may have my gunsmith shorten and checker it.

Any idea what stripper clips are used? Same as a Mauser 98?

I think this mauser-model could be converted to Mannlicher Schönauer too.

7.62x51 or 6.5x55 clips should wolrk just fine, as long as there is no overhead scope attached.

I use my ".308" clips for most mausers with the clip guide. The odd one will even work with 6.5x55's.

An iron sighted 6.5x55 with 5 rounds and a could 'clips' is a handy hunting rifle. No loose ammo and easy, fast loading and lots of bullets if need arrises - course I'm probably the only one ever got confused for a day or two.

I like the clips.

Interesting treatment of the safety!

I have a Model 1950, 30-06, in for repair. Proof date a simple '51' and a 4 digit serial number in the 4K range.
Single trigger w/flag and side safetys. Side safety ser#'d to the rifle so I doubt it was an add-on.

It's had both a side mount and a Leupold top mount on it in the past.
I'll ask the owner if he ever used charger clips in it before the 'scopes and what type.

I think stripper clips don´t be so usefull to 5 ammo magazine with rotating mecanism.

Apparently the Greeks, who used the Mannlicher-Schoenauer M1903 in 6.5x54 with stripper clps as their military rifle, did not think so.

In military purposes those clips are, of course, "must" but I have noticed that can I load my 6,5x57 Mannlicher quite fast without any clips.
By the way, has anybody tested how well stripper clips work with rotating magazine ?

Correct me if I am wrong but weren't the Greek M-S were like the Itlian Carcano's? Straight box mag nor rotary mag

The Greek Mannlicher was the first with rotary magazine.
