Grant,

Firstly, what do you want?

Some considerations:

* a side by side or under or over or either;

* Price range;

* Fixed chokes or changable chokes;

* What do you plan to use it for:
- Trap;
- Skeet;
- Simulated field;
- Game
- Ducks;
- Quail;
- Rabbits, foxes etc.

Just some things to consider. Some of the above involve different stock designs, some different chokes are required as well.

Maybe you want a "general" field shotgun?

In the gunshops you might find side by side shotguns of older makes with fixed chokes. Be aware that many might have 2 1/2" chambers not the usual 2 3/4" chambers. These go often for the $300 to $800 sort of price. 2 1/2" shotshells are available from an Italian brand imported by Beretta.

I'm not up to date on new or good second hand shotgun prices, not having bought one for a few years.

Tell us what you sort of want it for, and I'm sure people will chime in.

My suggestion is a used Beretta 686 with changable chokes. Try it out with somebody that can see if it fits you. /Staffan

Grant, have a look round but if you want a side by side used for less than $2000, given the strength of the aussie dollar you will find a very good AYA 12 bore s/s double trigger for your budget, best, Mike
