Actually Mac, I was a Navy F-18 Pilot but I rode Harley's so the HogPilot. Usual handle is AAHogPilot to include American Airlines as well.

Which squadrons / carriers were you at ?

I was re watching a film on Youtube the other night re carrier based fliers and one of the pilots said he could never get used to night landings.

Day or night, both scare hell out of me! I like my runways to stay in one place while I'm attempting a landing!
Landing on tiny sand bars strewn with rocks, in Alaska in a little tail dragger, is wild enough for me, but at least the sand bar stays put! My hat is off to those carrier pilots! That makes standing in front of a charging cape buffalo child's play IMO! Just imagine trying to stay above stall speed, with a nose up attitude, adjusting to whipping wind, and trying to hit a simultaneous main gear touch down on a pitching deck, in time to catch the tail hook on the cables,Then add night vision! Talk about a dangerous GAME!

I was in VFA-87 on the USS Theodore Roosevelt CVN-71 during Desert Storm. Have traps (landings) on the Indy and Lexington as well. Day traps are about as much fun as you can have with your clothes on, night is a different story. I always say that when the very first guy stood up in a ready room and said, "Skipper, I think we can do this at night", someone should have punched that guy in the mouth!

HogPilot:
My hat if off to you and your's.

On the subject of snap caps, with the barrels off you can always use one of those large gum erasers used to clean sanding belts, just hold it tight against the action block and release the triggers.

With the barrels off, what about using a thick magazine pressed up against the firing pins. I use SCI's Safari magazine.
