PH's using Merkel Doubles
      #191895 - 16/10/11 11:41 AM

Hi all,

I'm interested in hearing from any PH's out there (or people who know PH's) who own and use Merkel double rifles every day as part of their work.

What are your impressions of the gun in terms functionality, durability and reliability.
Would you recommend a Merkel gun to people?

I owned a Merkel in 470NE until we had indecent that provided my PH an excuse to convince me to do a deal that would end up with him owning it.

A nice rifle that I regret selling but have now remedied that error by reacquired a replacement 470.

Yes, to all the above.

Would you recommend a Merkel gun to people?"

Yes, as one of the options to look at.

I would look at just more than the Merkel
as gun fit and feel to the shooter is very important
and a Merkel might just not feel right to some people.

I don't use mine everyday, but I do recommend it. Also, it is the best that I could afford new.

Don't own one, am not a PH either. Had a look at one a PH was buying/just bought in 2002 in the Matetsi in Zimbabwe. Plus of course seen them and handled them here in Oz. This guy would have used them for backup regularly on elephant, buffalo etc.

.470, good calibre for backing up or general big bore use. Good cartridge as for a NE cartridge it is probably relatively more available than a lot of other NE ammo.

Plain rifle, well made for the price. Strong and solid.

For a PH however, or anyone really, I would insist on a deep V rear sight being put on it, or custom fitted afterwards instead of the crap small U notched rear sight.

Sometimes see them for around the $8000 price on the second hand market. Might have to wait for one to turn up at this price. Even saw one in the USA at this sort of price.

As suggested handle one and see how you like it.

The fixed rear sight on mine is V, but the folding ones are U.

NitroX

The one's that were coming into Australia were a slightly different configuration to O/S Models.

Not sure if this is still the case.

One of the changes was V sights on ours, the other was the stocks.

Mine has the fixed deep V. Haven't seen the "crap small U notched" version.

Mine had a V but also came with a Partridge front sight which was promptly changed.
An easy option as like Verney-Carron they use Recknagel fittings.
