Good English double rifles in Australia

Hi
How hard is it to get a good used English double rifle in Australia these days. I would imagine that if money is no object then you can get what you want.

Assuming you want to pay market value then how do you go about it. Are there any particular gunshops or auction houses that you should try or do you need contacts. Also, how hard is it to import from overseas given that an inspection is a lot more difficult. If you do not have a lot of experience then you would also need help with the evaluation. Who can you trust to do this.

Lots of questions I know but unless you can pony up for a new one then used has to be the only other option.

Forget gunshops. If anything decent came in it'd be hived off to their mates but then again abt 95%of shopfront staff know bugger all on the subject. There are specialist dealers and of course auction houses plus the many collectors and association members who deal between themselves.

A near "closed shop" here as it were but you have lots of research to do before buying. BTW there are at least three Oz based specialists on this forum. 500Nitro? has some entree into overseas buying, advice and importation.

Ask around, let people know what you are after (Make, calibre, Sidelock / boxlock and price range.). What I do is if say I hear about something I pass your tel number onto the owner and then it's up to you if and when they call.

To be honest, I'd look at what is available in the US and the UK as well (and maybe NZ). No point limiting yourself to Australia.

Ta. And I might add to the OP that here are a number of obsolete Euro calibres that have no interest outside that continent. (10.5 x 60?, 9.3 x 72 etc)

In short one man's fish is another's poisson.

Check out the auctions. Sometimes things come up, and do not go for a lot of $$$.

If you go to certain "specialists" they will charge you a bucket load of coin and it won't be cheap at all, high world price, but they will buy themselves at the local "Aussie price".

If it has shortened barrels then I think it's one that's been to the NT.

How long ago was it in the NT ?

This gun is the one that went ??????, turned up at Boronia, Bob de Vries, Whitehorse Arms.

Way back probably in the 70s. Remember I said "IF" and I was told that Pedersen did at least one.

Hell, this gun only just turned up recently - 2 - 3 years ago.

I think I may have the gun you are thinking of but are you sure it was shortened as i don't think mine has been.

^ Allison had a shortened Manton with (IIRC) 23" tubes that Pedersen had apparently worked on. As you know Mantons were solely retailers and L&L principally so (in India)and most of those around here came from Indjah. It may be one that Wally and Saunders brought in.

Apparently some were "strained" a touch by the then common use of 3031 in an attempt to replicate original loads on a grain for grain cordite equivalent.

In all matters "caveat emptor".

Never hear that one before !!! I'll ask the question. I know a lot of guns were well used in the past up there during the mass killing of Buffalo.

What the old school used to have to do to get guns working shows how aussies are good at adapting. They used to buy old ammo from the UK, remove the cordite and reload different calibres.

In that case my gun is different as I know the previous owner and I know he wants it back. I think he is on this forum.

Most of the guns in this country were brought in by those two people !!!!

Could that be the same Lyon & Lyon I looked at there in 2008?

The barrels were supposedly 24". They had a Jeffery .450/.400 the same length, too, but couldn't say whether they had 3" or 3.25" chambers. Both handled well but I wondered if barrel length might actually be important in a marginal DG calibre.

Marginal as in it's not a "stopping" calibre or marginal for use of on DG Game.

I agree it's not a stopping calibre like a 50+ that provides some shock but it certainly kills DG well.

Sorry mate I have amended my post to include L&L in India as a retailer. I wouldn't consider it as marginal anywhere given that the 404J was its rimless equivalent.
