I found a gorgeous damascus side by side 12 gauge marked W. Napier - can anyone tell me about the maker?

Nothing in either of Nigel Brown's "British Gunmakers"

If no luck try British Militaria forums Yuku - there is a guy Bill Curtis who has a tremendous amount of
info on gunmakers, if it is British

I suppose that W. Napier was a scottish Gunmaker or seller. You can find his name from there:

Try "Gun search".

GroovyMike
I've checked every book I own and there is no mention of W.Napier in any of them .
Also the Belgium gunmakers list.Nothing
Can you post a photo of the proof marks and also some photos of the gun and a close up of the damascus pattern. I'm sure if you post some photos we can Identify your gun.

good shooting

Just speculating here - did Napier of London ever sell guns? These days they only sell gun oils and hunting accessories, but I wonder about the past?

With my link above you can go to John Dickson & son`s homepage. There is a gun-searc machine and under the "make" you can find name "Napier". So maybe this firm knows something about that gunmaker.

Seems facebook doesnt like you uploading pictures.

If you don't get the results you want here i'd suggest British Militaria Forums.

I uploaded them to my Flickr so i could put them here for you, hope that's ok.

I picked up the April 2015 copy of Sporting Gun and it answers earlier speculation, (see above), about Napier of London (makers of gun care products), perhaps once being gunmakers:

It seems Steve Rowe, the founder and managing director of Napier of London was London born, but his family emigrated to New Zealand when he was a toddler. He's since returned and "Steve launched his company, naming it after the New Zealand city of Napier where he grew up".

Interestingly, Rowe explains that if you put a wet gun in a slip, it starts rusting almost immediately, and it should be rubbed down and dried as much as possible first. His claim is that if the metalwork and bore are then coated with a patch of their product VP90, (which comes in handy sachets), "the corrosion inhibitors in the oil start working almost immediately to prevent rust". Since it's raining today and I have a pheasant hunt lined up, I'll give it a go.

It's quite possible that, the 'Napier' name on this old shotgun is simply a retailer and perhaps not from Great Britain at all. We often see here in New Zealand shotgun ribs marked, "Tisdalls of Auckland", for instance. I'd be fairly certain this company never made a gun though they must have imported and sold a great many in this country with their name already stamped on them.
