manufacture dates
      #190849 - 27/09/11 07:08 PM

Does anyone know if its possible to date a Lee Speed sporter by the serial numbers stamped on the underside of the action and barrel?

If this isn't know, is there any time line in regard to what features, e.g. bolt/rifle without any safety, bolt with safety on striker, safety on side of action that would help date when a rifle was produced.

I really only need to know if its pre 1900 or after.

thanks,
Ron.

A gentleman under the name of JC5 often posts here - he is your best bet.

The models between 1897 and 1904 when they dropped the "Lee Speed patents" marking are very similar. I belive until 1896 they only produced the #1 sporter with the ribbed barrel and I
suspect that is when they introduced the "for cordite only" marking.

Not exactly much help - which model do you have - Pictures would help.

thanks all for your replies.

The reason I'm after this info is that I have a Lee Speed at customs from an overseas auction that was listed as pre 1900. Customs now what me to prove its pre 1900 and if I can't, the safety will need to be marked to show when the safety is in the FIRE position.

Its just that i prefer to leave a nice old rifle in its original form if I can.

A photo of the rifle will be a bit hard to get and show but the rifle is 303 cal, safety on bolt striker, dust cover, magazine cut off, bolt with flat to knob and is of the No 2 pattern.

Ron

Hi Ron,

If you can't prove this to Customs and need to have the 'Fire' position marked, I suggest that Ron Croxon 6765 8425 can engrave the required info on the rifle in whatever 'Style' you want and even gold fill the engraving. He is the gentleman that done my two Custom CZ550's and is a Firearms Dealer and is known to Customs as he Imports actions etc. I can show photos if this would help.

Cheers,

Jeff Gray

Email sent.

If I can determine the date, I'll share it with the forum (if the OP agrees).

Cheers!
