He`s a Euro hunter I gather from the wattle homage?

Good on him and good to see some respect to the animal.

Yes indeed Gryph, a Euro hunter with some very staunch Euro attitudes which are interesting to see in action.

Central European/German hunting tradition is to cover the wound with a branch and insert a twig in the beasts mouth to signify its last meal.

'Waidmannsheil" is replied to with a "Waidmannsdank".

A shot of whiskey, brandy or snapps drunk from the left hand to celebrate.

Anyone whom actually knows what they are talking about can please correct me, or add to it.

Gents,

Waidmannsheil (pronounced Vide-mons-heil) is a hunters salute (German), which if I'm not mistaken can be used as a greeting as well, though I haven't used it as such. It is used often enough that the GGCA (German Gun Collectors Association) uses the salute as the name of their newsletter. Waidmannsdank is the acknowledgement or "thank you" (dank). I really appreciate the Europeans sticking to their tradition of paying homage to their fallen prey; to me it adds addition depth and class to the experience of the hunt. It sure beats the f'd up gomerish fist pumping and rather crass commentary that we see and hear all too often on TV. I can appreciate being happy about taking one's quarry but good grief, most critters even DG are generally just minding their own business when we take them.

Dr. Deer,

Thank you for posting the great picture and congratulations on your successful hunt with your drilling. The 7X65R is sure a nice cartridge. Nice touch with the placement of the branches.

Waidmannsheil!

Buchseman

John there are 2 twigs as a prime duty - and those are given by a comrade to the shooter or the shooter perfoms it himself:

1. Game Twig - last bite - goes into game's mouth from the shooter to the quarry as a farewell to the eternal green pastures...
2. Hunters Twig - twig is diped into blood of the entry wound and put on the right side of the hunters hat/cap...this twig proudly anounces to all that a Big game has been honorably taken by the carrier...

Now onto game itself. Game should be put laying onto its right hand side.
Now - when you are suppose to leave it in the field to get the tractor or other way of transport or whatever, you must let all that might pass near the fallen game know that it was already honorably claimed by a hunter - so you put a twig onto its upper side (similar to the cutting of the Elephants tail).

Remember:

So very nice to see this applied so far from here - Good Job!

Very nice photos. It is a very fine tradition of the German hunters. It is good to see that hunters pay homage to their prey. For me it is also a sign of appretiation of our privaledge to hunt.

Thanks for your eplanation of the finer detail 93mouse

the RH side "observance" confuses me. What if it were the other or a Texas heart shot?

Waidmannsheil as a simple greeting between hunters is replied to normally only by repeating Waidmannsheil. The only time one replies Waidmannsdank, is when you are standing beside your recently bagged animal, in which case you are accepting the other hunter's congradulations.

It's custom to sit a while too, with the animal you have just shot, after you have given it that last bite, while it's soul passes to it's eternal pasture. It's a way of paying homage to the deer. My gamekeeper friend Guus and I were able to, in turn, pass this custom onto my son when he shot his first fallow buck.

I have also been looking for a SuS Drilling in 16/70-7x65R. The Driilings I have are in 7x57R and 8x57JR (.318") which I don't think are up to shooting the biggest sambar stags. Where I hunt them, (in NZ), there's lots of quail, a few pheasants and once a stoat. Having 1,1/8oz of shot on hand then would be mighty handy if the deer were scarce. Shooting a quail with an 8x68S bolt-action is probably not so Waidgerecht.
