Farquharson .500NE?
      #190315 - 20/09/11 09:53 PM

I have been offered what I've been told is a "falling-block single shot rifle by George Gibbs in .500 cordite" the first thing that came to mind was the pretty picture of a Farquharson, something I've always wanted to own Never heard of any Farquharson's in .500 NE, much less seen one. Can anyone shed some light on this? Could it be a BP rifle in .500 or .577/.500?

No Gibbs farquharson rifles are known to have been built in a nitro caliber that large. The records have mostly been lost in WWII so it is possible. It could also have been rebarreled or rebored at some point. If you could post some pictures of the barrel address and proof marks along with the action and its numbers I can give you a much better idea as to what you have.

Second what bouldersmith said. Could be possible.
It could be any of the suggestions you made here.
There were some trade Farquharsons in .500NE. If it is one, and priced right, it could still be quite a fine rifle.
I wouldn't get too hung up on the Gibbs name. IMO, all of the classic Farqs are wonderful rifles.

A Single Shot, not sure who made it was for sale here in 500NE for a long while. It was definitely one of the old English type of single shots, not Ruger or Modern.

It was firstly for sale privately and then it was in an auction. I believe it was the only one made.

It was damn heavy and didn't sell.

I'll see if I can find out who made it.

I remember one (a PD/trade Farkie) going to auction abt 1995 as part of a collectors (dec estate) in Melbourne.

The one I was thinking of was later than that but might have been the same one coming on the market again.

It was priced at $19,000, both privately and at the Auction.

Bouldersmith sold a Bourne in 500NE that was a modern build on a classic action not too long ago.
Steve Barnett has it on offer now.
Maybe you are thinking of that one.
