sweet looking rifle. I now know which pad to use on these rifles if one has to use a pad. The dark thin pad with black spacer looks terrific.

Hi Mckinney, that's an "Old English" Pachmayr pad. Thanks for the offer of the Nosler Partions, but I think I also have some. One of the guys I hunt with loads Combined Technology ballistic silvertips in his .243. I'd think that wouldn't be enough bullet, but he knows his rifle and can place his shots.

I shot a large whitetail buck with a 140gr. Combined Tec @ 2,940fps. from my 7x57 BRNO. The buck weighed jsut over 200pounds and the 'soft' bullet worked just fine. I see no real difference in the deer here - both can be large.

About any bullet in the 8x57 will work great as well. The 175gr. Sierra's are probably exceptionally accurate as are most Sierra's. With deer as my object of interest & with possibility of longe shots, that's what I'd use. The 150gr. Sierras would work for open country as well. I really don't see any deer as needing Nosler or other premium bullets. Even a 30/30 or RP factory 8x57 easily 'takes' deer.

Ackley couldn't wreck either Arisaka action 38 or 97. 8mm S bore is for .323" bullets so bang away!Harold

.318 bullet is very loose in the neck of a fired shell, and a .323 bullet is tighter but still moves easily. .

Theer you have it - the .323" bullets fit so in fired cases - I'd use them.

Note that if you have a whack of .318's, they'll probably shoot just fine too

The rifle is a Type S Sporter (S for "Stutzen" or carbine) and the caliber marking is 8X57 without the "S". However, it is evident that the neck of the chamber is large enough to allow .323" bullets to be fired in it, so the actual diameter of the bullet is immaterial. See the post by kuduae above.

Nosler Ballistic Tips preform like grenades under 50 yards on many deer I've seen or shot myself.People are attracted to their great accuracy.Partitions aren't needed for deer either but any Hornady inter-loc ,Rem Cor-loc ,Sierrra or Speer bullet will do fine. Our WT and MD get big body and antler wise here in Alberta. This fall I was impressed with the Scirocco II 130gr out of my son's T-3 6.5x55 in 130gr.Will a charge of 47gr RE22 it put 3 shots in .197" at 100 yards.......Electrocuted two WT's bangflops and went through 39" of flesh on an angling chest shot........Harold
