Stubby 9.3x62 & a Jungle Bear

The stubby 16-inch carbine is a winner. Kills well and handles like perfection especially in a dense fir and cedar jungle thicket like wear we found the bear.

View from the opposite direction;

Inside the thicket, dogs a-screamin', great day;

A couple great bear rifles;

Worked around a while till we found as good a spot as we could to get a view of the critter;

The shot;

A good one for these parts. Northern {Lower 48, Canucks... } Rockies blackies are ridge runners and the average boar goes 165 lb's in this state. This one went 240. It was.............a downhill drag!!!

9.3 nice going and good shooting. Good pic showing the Marlin and your 9.3X62. Is the Marlin a 45-70?

Good to see you have put the 9.3 "shorty" to use already Rod.

Would be ideal in that tight stuff.

I love the 9.3 and if I were to choose one rifle for everything it would be my choice.

Thanks fellows.

Yes, Rule, that Marlin was a .45-70. However, the favored rifle of the houndsmen here is the Marlin .444. They like those fast big light bullets that blow up and stay inside the animal. We worked up a load for the .45-70 that does the same thing, a Remington 300 grain JHP at 2100 fps and it is a bomb on bear.

I actually like the longer bullets of the 9.3, personally, as they give me the advantage of shooting thru branches or the bear's forearm for killing shots on treed bear.

I guess having both in the same mob works.

Here's a well-worn .444;

Blooded my most recent knife, too, a stout job I made from a sawbar;

With an older "Standhauer" for clearing brush and field butchering I also made from a sawbar;

Way to go - nice bear. I've never shot them using dogs.

Usually spot and stalk spring or fall or in the grain (rye or oats) fields in the fall - again, spot and stock.

Bears that have been feeding heavily on berries or oats/rye are very good eating - if you like eating bears, that is.

This bear had a gullet full of...........bees!

He must have found himself a nice batch of honey and had himself a fill, makers and all!

As usual, the Prvi did its work to predictable perfection. Obviously good expansion and naturally shot thru the critter, too. For our stuff here that Prvi is a dandy.
