Brno 8x57 shoots damn good.....
      #189999 - 16/09/11 02:22 PM

After a bit of tweaking on the Brno 8x57, I got the 150 Sierra's, 170 Speer's and the 195 grain Hornady's to shoot very close at 100 yards, so close that I can hunt with any of my reloads without having to adjust the sights.
This Brno is a post war rebuild, that would probably explain the wood fitting too tight and me having to remove a bit of the barrel channel. I have a couple friends that want me to turn it into an 8mm-06, I am not going to wreck a perfect shooter by changing it only to gain a few fps and possibly ruining the accuracy in the process.
The last 8mm-06 I had shot the 150's at 3005 fps, I am getting 2840 fps with a nice Brno 8x57, I can't see changing it for a small gain like that. It won't knock over game any better anyays....

Well done. My son has a refurb 8x57 VZ-24 and has had good results with the Hornady 170 RNSP.

Would you please PM your load data.

.458shooter - the 8x57 has a CIP max load for factory ammo at 57,000PSI. At that pressure, it will easily match the .30/06 for speed with the same bullet weight, depending on the powder used. That meanes it will do 2,450fps with 220gr., close to 2,800fps with 180's and 3,000fps with 150's - given the 'right' powder, just as the '06 will do those speeds with the 'rifle' powder.

The larger bore/groove diameter of the 8x57 over the .30/'06 increases the 8's expansion ratio. This makes up for the reduced case capacity of the 57mm case and allows the smaller case to match the ballistics of the larger .30/06 round. When re-chambered for the '06 case, the performance is thus enhanced to the tune of about 100fps over standard. That means it will quite handily make 3,100fps with 150gr., about 3,000fps with 165's. With X type bullets, that's a good load. If that's worth the change, go for it. Be aware you will need to neck turn or inside ream to get rid of the donut that forms inside the case neck (neck/shoulder junction) when necking up '06 brass. It can be a pain in the butt.

Or rechamber to 8X64S Brenneke and have access to factory loads and brass....

The original 8mm Magnum. This would be a good choice if you were to rechamber.

I really like the 8x57 Brno in its original form and chambering, I don't intend on rechambering, scoping it or sporterizing it.
I have lots of brass for the 8 and lots of once fired 06 brass if I need more.
Thanks for all the suggestions, there was a couple that I might do if the Brno didn't shoot.
