Ruger #1 in 450 NE
      #188430 - 24/08/11 10:25 AM

My #1 is due in from Cabelas in two days. I live in Las Vegas and found a Boddington one in Reno for an asking price of $999.88. It's new with all the mod cons.

My main question is: Do you think the Hornady load will be sufficient for gophers?

I owned (until my nephew saw it) a #1 in .458 Lott. Great gun. Put a 500 gr solid from attitude to posterior on a Cape Buffalo. However, I wanted a Nitro rifle for my hunting, so the 450 NE fills the bill. I was going to re-chamber the .458 to .500, but J.D. Jones (SSK Industries) wanted $1970 to do it.

What's your opinion on the .450 NE caliber? I know it's more than sufficient for anything that steps in front of it. I also understand the cost difference in ammo from the 458 Lott to the .450 NE. What I'm interested in is your opinions. Like, should I have the safety reshaped? How about a Limbsaver - Mag-Na-Port - recoil reducer in the stock?

Hello poprivit.

Great choice of rifle and a great choice of cartridge.

I built my own No.1 in 450NE and love it. Till I get time to re-stock it, I'm still running the standard factory stocks. I just added a 1-1/8" Kick EEZ recoil pad to give it a little more length (Always find standard Ruger length stocks too short for me). I like the Kick EEZ pads, firm enough to not botton out with larger calibres and soft enough to make a real nice difference. Mag-na-porting and recoil reducers in the stock wont be necessary.

I would highly recommend changing the safety. Those long 3-1/4" cases are almost garrenteed to hang up on the standard factory safety slide, mine did 99% of the time. Made a new contoured and checkered low profile slide and the cases now eject cleanly, always! Never had a hang up since.

Great cartridge in a No.1 the 450NE, because the action is so strong and given the case capacity, one could get 458 Lott type ballistics if you wanted to, but I havn't worried about that. The standard sort of elephant stopping load of a 480-500 grain projectile at 2150 odd fps is easy to achieve, loading those long straight cases is easy and case life is excellent (just use a good case sizing lube - Imperial Sizing Die Wax)

Best

Another one is called "STOS" by Ponsness Warren. Not only a great high pressure lube, but it also wipes off the cases very easily - which is nice. I use both STOS and Imperial Die Wax and have not stuck a case since switching to them. A little bit goes a long way.

Alex, just wish you were in the area 'cause I'd have one of your safties installed chop-chop. That and some case hardening on the action, a Leupold 1x4 and touch of engraving.

I find that I sell too many guns. If I have my name engraved on them, I keep 'em forever.

The .450NE is a wonderful choice for the Ruger. I have a Gibbs double in .450NE and love it. I also have two Alexander Henry doubles in .450BPE and love them as well.

Point is, you can load that cartridge from 45/70 ballistics to dinosaur slaying power.

Congrats. Let us know how it pans out.

Curl - the Gibbs sounds like a nice hunting gun. Have you taken anything large with it?

Cabelas says tomorrow (Friday) it should be at my dealer. My nephew already says he wants to hold it. What's my nephew got to do with my #1? Well, my last #1 in .458 Lott, is in his gunroom, and he says possession is 9/10ths of the law. Think I've seen the last of that rifle.

MidwayUSA is selling .450 3-1/4 ammo for right around the same price as the .458 Lott - $100 + or - for 20 rounds. Not bad methinks. Then it's time for a set of dies.

What's your favorite load for the 450 NE?

Poprivit, Curl's Gibbs is one double I have lusted for from the first time I saw it on his site. Perfect boxlock IMO.

As for the safety on the No.1, a modification is definitely worthwhile.
My 450/400 notched my thumb twice. Guess I am holding it a bit loosely, but even with a tighter grip, my thumb is right alongside the safety and it does not take much movement to catch it. Alex's safety looks like the ideal solution to this and the case ejection problem as well. Maybe a bunch of us could place a bulk order. Depending on cost, I could see putting one on each of my No.1s based on looks alone.

Most used loads in my No.1 450NE as follows:

1/ 480 grain Woodleigh RSN, 92 grains ADI-AR2209 (H4350), Federal 215 primer, Hornady case, ????fps
2/ 500 grain Hornady RSN, 90 grains ADI-AR2209 (H4350), Fereral 215 primer, Hornady case, 2130fps

24" barrel that slugs out at 0.457"

Usual handloading caveats apply, my rifle, my loads, if you start here you are on your own, etc etc.

I've got a lead bullet load that pushes a 475 grain RNGC bullet at about 1700-1800fps and shoots pretty well, but I can't find it at the moment. Better find that and put it with the others

Alex - would you be up for a group order of your Ruger #1 safety? I think a lot of us would want one. It doesn't look too hard to install, but I can break an anvil in a sandbox and lose two of the pieces. Gunsmith is in order.

It should do you well. A few years ago I converted on of the stainless/laminated 45/70 guns to a 45-2.6" barrel (Pac-Nor) that was set up for the right twist rate for a 500gr bullet at 2150fps. The conversion cost me less than $800, including the barrel. The rifle is a lot of fun, I kept the 22" light factory contour so it is a handful. The case size seems about right, I get a volume between the 458w and 458 Lott, the Starline brass is cheap in comparison to 450NE, so are the dies. Another benefit is no filler is needed. Since the 450NE has become more available since then I would probably have gone with that chambering.

Hey Poprivet, to answer your questions: I do believe that the 450 N.E.3 1/4" will be powerful enough for gopher hunting! I bagged a Big Foot with mine, it was a one shot kill! Don't be concerned with the recoil, it is not that bad. Really, it's no big deal. I have the Boddington Elephant also. I was going to have a No.1 in 458 Win Mag. rechambered to 450 N.E. before I found a Boddington. The bore diameter and twist are the same. Before you have it ported or put on a different pad shoot it just like it came fron the factory. I think you will like it just fine that way. I have only shot the Hornady 480 grain soft points in mine so far, but I see no need for hotter loads as they are more than enough for anything on this planet!

Beltfed, I'm going to hedge on whether the .450NE is sufficient for gophers. You might have just been lucky. If those suckers are wounded and charge they will sink their long front teeth into your balls, and you know the result of that!

The last groundhog I killed was a big old grey Virginia boar all fattened up late last September. It was a headshot from about 25 yards with my .500NE double. I felt comfortable taking the shot, knowing I had the second barrel in the event of a charge.

I might go so far as hunt one with my Gibbs; but again, I would have the instant backup shot, even though the .450NE is a bit under-powered. It would be dicey with a single shot rifle. A man's got to be careful.

Maybe now you understand why people hunt them from great distances with flat-shooting varmint rifles. That's the safe (but sissy) way of hunting marmots. The fat little fuckers can't maintain a charge over 250 yards. Of course, I'm assuming your Georgia whistle pigs are at least somewhat as mean and nasty as our big Virginia groundhogs.

I swear, the most frightening sight of my life was seeing one of those crafty marmots glaring at me from the opening of his den as I rode by on horseback. All this happened in the Flattops Wilderness of Colorado in July 2002. Still sends chills down my spine to think of that day and how close I was to danger. Count your blessings.

Huvius, I know you are in Colorado. I just hope there on the front range is far enough away from that nasty little beast. You can see the blood lust in his beady eyes.

OK Curl, where be the photos of that old Gibbs smokepole of yours. If it isn't too damn rusty I might make an offer. I need another door stop. I'd pay up to $200 American dollars. Think of all that money!

The Gibbs can be seen here:

It's mired in a bit of bullshit, but beautiful nonetheless.

That $200 sounds right tempting.

I love love my 1978 H-1 tropical .458 Wm. So classic and that awesome .458 caliber. It will always be a keeper because who knows when I might need to drive a 500 grain steel solid at 2150 fps? Most of the time it's 405 lead at 1500 fps

C. Curl - Lord love a duck. That thing is beautiful! It was an insult to offer a measly $200. Hell, after seeing it, I'd got to at least $225 at a minimum.

Now that you are its caretaker, what have you planned for it? How'd you like to go to the Kamchatka Penninsula in Russia to hunt Siberian Brown Bears April 2012? I'm going and will write an article for Dangerous Game Hunting Magazine. I need someone to shoot while I shoot the 'ol Nikon. Guarantee you'd be in pictures. I'll take my 450 or my .416.

Bonanza - Just picked up my 450 yesterday. It's Boddington Elephant series #227 out of 250. .450 3-1/4 inch Nitro Express. Matt blue and soft finish on the lumber. No where as pretty as your 458, but the animals won't have to squint due to glare. Any plans for large, clawing or stomping, critters?

I'll work out photos after I take a few. Probably next week, or so.
