.375 Hölderlin
      #188112 - 18/08/11 05:29 PM

Does anybody have a rifle in that caliber. The basic shell is 8x68S upgraded to 9,5 mm bullet. I´m thinking to build civil FN 98 Mauser to that caliber because the shell goes quite easy to that action.

I've seen a .338WM necked to 9.3mm (366 Alaskan). I would say the Holderlin would provide perfect velocity for the 286 grain Woodleigh PPSN. Well worth building one IMNSHO.

I chambered one up in the 80's or early 90's. I called it the 9.5x68. I wasn't aware of it being anything but a wildcat. The fellow I sold it to had Huntinton's make his a set of dies, so dies should be available from RBCS now, under the name 9.5x68.

With RWS brass it will make 2,900fps with 270gr. bullets. The capacity is only about 3gr. more than a .375H&H, but the brass is incredibly strong.

I turned the belts down to .522" on .375H&H brass, necked and trimmed. They worked fine as well after fireforming. No - they weren't dangerous.

A 'nice' calibre that is now replaced by the .375 Ruger.

One good reason for this caliber selection is that there is two good "little brothers" for it, 8x68S and 6,5x68. It helps a lot if I will make a take-down rifle with two or three calibers.

IIRC, that is basically what the old, miscarried 9.5 Musgrave/.375 Musgrave was, a .338 opened up to .375. Musgrave in Bloemfontein advertised it in the '80's but I'm not sure if they ever built one. Now defunct, as is the company. Too bad, they made some nice "sporterized" M98 Mausers for a while, and had their own action, too.

I'd love a barrel in one of these for my Mauser 03. Pity custom barrels aren't available.

The .375 Hölderlin
The 8x68mm S case has functioned as the parent case for the .375 Hölderlin (9.5x68mm), which is essentially a 9.53 mm (.375 caliber) necked-up version of the 8x68mm S. The wildcat status of the .375 Hölderlin ended in 2007 when it got C.I.P. certified and became an officially registered and sanctioned member of the German 68 mm "family" of magnum rifle cartridges. If the .375 Hölderlin will become available as factory ammunition, like the older cartridge "family" members (8x68mm S and 6.5x68mm), is still unknown.

Similar to a .375 H&H Magnum.

Quote:

.375 Hölderlin maximum C.I.P. cartridge dimensions. All sizes in millimetres (mm).

Americans would define the shoulder angle at alpha/2 ≈ 14.53 degrees. The common rifling twist rate for this cartridge is 305 mm (1 in 12 in), 6 grooves, Ø lands = 9.30 mm, Ø grooves = 9.55 mm, land width = 2.92 mm and the primer type is large rifle magnum.

The .375 Hölderlin has 5.65 ml (87 grains) H2O cartridge case capacity. According to the official C.I.P. guidelines the .375 Hölderlin case can handle up to 440 MPa (63,816 psi) piezo pressure.

According to the creator of the .375 Hölderlin, Mr. C. Otterbein, the idea behind the .375 Hölderlin was to develop a big game cartridge based on a German cartridge case for standard sized Mauser 98 bolt action rifles. The ballistic performance had to be close to or equal the performance of the .375 Holland & Holland Magnum. The 8x68mm S was chosen as parent case, since it offers enough case capacity and a competent gunsmith can relatively easy rechamber a standard Mauser 98 rifle to accept 8x68mm S based cartridges. To keep costs down and promote an acceptable recoil level blowing out the parent case was renounced.

This is exactly as I did, 20 years ago. Excellent round. Seems to me, Keith was getting about 3,100fps with 235's, along iwht 2,900fps with those 270gr.

The .338 necked up to .375 was the .375 Chatfield Taylor in the States, seems to me, where it had some following in the 60's through 80's.

Reviving this thread to see if there have been any more comments. This as well.
