9.3 x 62 Loads needed please.
      #186251 - 21/07/11 08:17 PM

Well I finally have some Boolits from my NOE group buy mold. My FN GC's weigh 286 grains and the HP GC's 280 grains.

I have a custom sizeing die for my Lyman 450. The .375 GC's go on very well with a slightly convex base.

Lube is SPG. I have pure wool felt wads.

I am now ready to try some loads. I have done a search and it seems 1,800 fps is the max.. Keeping in mind I only have access to Trail Boss and Aussie powders.

Does anyone have a starting load please ?

Those bullets look great. I would think the Aussie version of Varget would be my powder of first resort. I don't have any loads to suggest, but I believe that powder is the right choice.

You might need a slight bit of filler to keep the powder in the back of the case. Dacron, kapok, or foam wads should do fine.

A bit more research overnight and I'm going to try 60% of maximum loads of 2206H (H4895) with pure wool wads first. I use 2208 (varget) for my full power loads but I'm not sure how low I could go.

CaptCurl I'll let you know what happens.

You can go pretty low with Varget if you use correct wadding. I'm loading Varget in my .450/.400 3.25" NfB loads with a 265 grain cast bullet. It's great. Mention of it here:

I think H4895 is a contender also.

Good luck and report back.

Well one advantage of having had three weeks leave and exclusive access to a 900 yards rifle range 2.5km from my back door is that I can race out and check loads.

Recommended loads with jacketed projectiles and 2206H/H4895 are:
51 grains (2,130) to 56.5 (2,405)

I took 60% of the max load which came to approx. 35 grains 2206H/H4895. My cast FN projectiles were seated so the GC was level with the base of the case neck and the start of the shoulder. A single circular woolen wad was placed on top of the powder column and seemed to hold it stable. This gives off a distinctive lanolin smell once fired (and burnt). Cases are Norma, Primers Rem 9 1/2. I set up my target at 50 yards for these resuls.

35 grns 1.710" group in a vertical line
36 grns 1.480" in a perfect, neat, triangle
37 grns 2.535" again in a straight line
38 grns 2.305" triangle

My chronograph is currently with a fellow forum member so I couldn't measure velocitys. If the 36 grain load holds to 3" at 100 yards I'd be happy.

What should I do now ? Keep increaing the charge of powder ? I'm happy to try 2208/Varget. Should I add more tin and make the projectiles harder ?

Yes - the ADI version of H4895 is what I'd use - 50% or more is OK, but I'd also use a filler - I've come to prefer a compressed wad of Kapok for this in my .450 Alaskan with 1/2 case of H4895.

Varget would also work, I suspect.
Either powder will take the 9.3x62 to the top with jacketed or cast.
I suspect a heat treated bullet will surprise you as to what it will 'take'. I've shot them in a .375H&H to 2,800fps - 270gr. CAST- no leading, using LBT Blue.

The harder bullet and better lube is needed for higher velocity loads. In the 9.3x62, I suspect SPG might let you down around 2,100fps - just a gut feeling.

Well I've had a bit of luck.

All tests were two rounds into a target at 50 yards.

25 grains 2207 with two wool wads 2.315"
54 grains 2209 with no wads 1.090"
51 grains 2206H with one wool wad 0.480"

I think we have a winner with the 2206H (H4895).
I will try it again at 100 yards when I get a chance.

Thx for your help

It does sound as though you are on the right track Trophet with your loads, and nicely cast bullets too. Like you I have found a single wool wad down on the powder gives excellent powder ignition even with the slower 2209 (4350 equivalent)I'm using in my 404 with cast bullets, and the wad burns cleanly away albiet with a burning hair smell and slight puff of smoke. All very "period" for an early nitro express I like to think

Those 9.3 cast bullets through the shoulders should anchor any boar I would think and I wouldn't be too afraid of planting them where it hurts in a buffalo either.

John, from what I have read the way to find your starting load with Trail Boss is to fill the case to base of bullet. Weight it then use 70% of this weight. Build up from there and do not compress the load.

Cheers

Greg

I suspect that's the way John does it.

Hodgdon says the non-compressed full or max. load is loaded to the seated bullet's base. The starting load is 70% of that amount. They also stated they could not get close to any modern rifle's max, pressure wise, loaded this way and that the highest speed they achieved was with a 180gr. jacketed bullet in a .300 magnum- at soemthing like 1,785fps IIRC.

That's roughly the same speed I got with 3,7gr. in my .17AH with 25g.r HP/s. Their report is like a .22LR with groups 1/2 my little fingernail at 50 yards, and the duplex reticle 9scoep set at 18X.

I've used it in a .375/06IMP, .45/60, .375 Winchester, .17AH, .22Hornet - started and stayed with the max load as felt a waste of time to download it.
The .375 bottlenecked case ran 1,360fps (or thereabouts); 1,745fps from the AH; straight .375 900+change w/200gr. jacketed; 1,250fps .22 Hornet; 1,050fps long seated .45/60; - all max capacity loads and all very slow and soft pressure wise - go-pow loads. No hangfires, and good accuracy, all round.

some printed data - max load only: The loads with cast bullets are indicated.

.375H&H 235gr. 26.3gr. - 1,144fps - no pressure given
.40/65Win 400gr. 12.0gr. - 915fps - 21,200CUP
.416 Rem Mag. 350gr. 29.0gr. 1,143fps - 29,900CUP.
.416 Rigby 350gr. 35.0gr. 1,354fps - no pressure given
.450 3 1/4" Sharps 500gr.cast 29.0gr. 1,105fps 24,300CUP
.458 WinMag 385gr. cast 19.0gr. 1,123fps - 16,100CUP
.458 WinMag 405gr. cast 21.0gr. 1,082fps - 17,100CUP
.458 WinMag 485gr. cast 19.0gr. 962fps - 22,700CUP

The Hodgdon Annual Mannual 2009 gives the introduction for Trail Boss, however at that time, it's mostly handgun related as that was it's primary reason for being, ie: safe - reduced velocity loads for cowboy action shooting.

The next year the Mannual gave jacketed and cast data for a variety of other rounds, saying it was virtualy good for any bottlnecked or straight case if loaded without compression & that most if not all were OK with jacketed or cast bullets.

Due to the low velocity, but normal low (15,000 to 35,000PSI pressures, it turned out good for firelapping chores as well. It does not require a 'small volume charge which can give ignition or burning problems, and is virtually the easiest of all powders to use. On top of that, if used as directed, it CANNOT stick a bullet in the bore like can happen when jacketed bullets are driven too slowly with other powders using reduced loads.

The Hodgdon Annual Mannual 2010 has the article, loads, etc for the intermediate rounds with pressure listings - I gave my copy of the 2010 Hodgdon book away, unfortunately - I can't find it and did give one away.

edited for clarity, I hope.
