Of course. Anything with a new barrel. Even a 6.5 Carcano!!
I've heard of some rebored/barrelled to 7.62x39 which would be an interesting chambering. Lots of ammo availability here in the USA and a good deer caliber, too.
I had a 7.62x39 CZ527 for a few years and really like it except...it was one of those with the unfixable feed problem and cost me a second dog from a pack of marauding dogs. I got rid of it.

A friend gave me a cut down Carcano rifle that needed some love.

Have you checked to see if that specific model had gain/progressive twist rifling?
The early rifle models had 22.78 INCHES twist at the chamber end tightening to 7.93 INCHES at the muzzle, so shortening the barrel might leave you with a very slow twist rate not suitable for the wide range of bullet weight/lengths.

No gain twist rifling in the barrel. Barrel length is original. The rifle wood was really botched. I'm on the home stretch of the build. The trigger guard is really giving me fits with rust bluing. Having a difficult time getting it to blacken.

Hopefully, I will be able to post pics of the competed project soon.

Ah, that's good.
When you said cut down I thought you were referring to the barrel. Later models were conventional twist anyway so even if the barrel of a late model long rifle was cut down there would be no loss.
These are neat rifles. A bunch have come in over the last few years but the ones I investigated were really in bad shape. I'd like to tinker with one. The original 6.5 chambering is actually a darn good and well-designed cartridge.

"SUMMARY: I submit that my Eaton Carcano is not inherently dangerous so far as its design (action strength and receiver-barrel integrity) is concerned. I doubt that my example was "accidently" made exceedingly strong, so I say - "Myth Busted"."

If that's what happened to an "Eaton" M/C I wonder how an unmodified one would fare?

the "eaton- coeey" conversion is absolutely safe and the original carcano was one of the strongest actions in an US army test after WW 2.
I think the idea is hilarious that also in the 1920s a well respectet firm would sell a hunting rifle that was unsafe in any way. the 6,5x54 Mannlicher Schönauer was not a modern pressure bomb and the craftsman who did this conversion understand very well what they were doing.
if you have a mauser 98 and a carcano side by side you see clearly the carcano action is a little bit narrower and lighter built for a smaller cartridge. perhaps not like a bolt-action rifle specifically for the .223 Remington, but somewhere in between.

nevertheless, it's no problem for the action to handle the 8x57 IS and the .30-06 if you drill out the barrel.iirc, the US army rechamber a 6,5 mm carcano to 30 06 springfield, fire this and the rifle survive. more is not possible.

Yes.
Barrel expansion as seen in the Eaton would not be a problem in all likelihood with an unmodified M/C.
If the modified Eaton took the strain yet the barrel extension expanded, I suspect an unmodfied one may take even more pressure.
Of course the weak link is always the cartridge case.
Would be interesting to know what amount of gas escaped behind the action.
