Custom Martini 9x57R
      #185250 - 05/07/11 06:43 AM

Bought this custom Martini (built on Greener shotgun action) on GunBroker awhile back. Have no idea who built it as the only markings on it are the caliber (9x57R) and original serial number. Was smitten the instant I saw it so bought it. Unfortunately, it had all sorts of mechanical issues and it took awhile to find a 'smith to tackle it. I'm pleased to say it now goes "bang" and it is anxiously awaiting a trip to the deer woods this season. If the handy-work looks familiar to anybody, I'd love to know who commisioned it and/or built it.

I like your Martini. How does it shoot? Can you give some details of your loading practices for it? Handy woods gun, I must say.

I haven't started loading for it yet. It came with 2 boxes of custom ammo by Quality Cartridge using reformed .444 Marlin brass. I have the better part of one box left to start hunting with if I don't get handloads worked up in time. Proper headstamped brass is available from Horneber & Bertram but at $42-$60 per 20, I'll likely neck down .444. C-H has dies and the oddball .356" bullets are available from Hawk and Buffalo Arms. I may also get a swage die from Corbin and squeeze down common .358 bullets. I haven't done any serious grouping with it yet because of my limited ammo supply at the moment but so far it shows promise, especially with only a 3x scope. Will report back when I've spent a little more range time with it.

What a nice looking hunting rifle. I use the 358 Winchester. It is a DRT cartridge. I have only used the 200 gr bulk Remington bullets from Midway USA to hunt with. Good luck with this beauty. Rustyzipper.

Before you get to carried away, you might slug the barrel and verify that is .356/9mm. I recall someone sometime back on one of the Martini boards discussing building one of these and just using a barrel intended for .358 Winchester.

By the way the last person to assemble this rifle didn't know what the were doing as the cocking indicator is in wrong.
