New Sako in large calibres?
      #184990 - 01/07/11 06:41 PM

It seems Sako are soon to be making a few large calibres: .450 Rigby and .500 Jeffery, amongst others. Has anyone heard more? My brother and I were just browsing their catalogue.

Looking in the catalogue online, they hinted (unless I read wrong) that there would be a few non-anniversary big ones made every year.

Is true, a mate in Auckland has a 416Rigby on order. Its not just the Anniversary model, the "standard" Safari will also be available in XL action - but its 4x the price of a standard 85.

So what action are they being built on?

G'Day Fella's,

Chuck 375, It appears to be the Sako 85 Action!
Pity it wasn't some new "Two Lug" bolt action!!!

(Edited by Homer) Please don't get me wrong, these new Sako rifles's are a beautiful looking firearm! I'm just a Died in the Wool, Two Bolt Lug kind a bloke!!!

Doh!

These rifles of Sako is made for the diehard Sako collectors. A good MaugnumMauser from Golmatics could be done much cheeper...and really better for the fact is a Mauser98, which is much more massive than any Sako M.85. The Sakos however does look nice. Sako has never made a bad gun yet. I have yet to own a nice semisporter rifle in .22-250.

Unfortunatley my brother and I have fallen to the temptation of purchasing one of these rifles in the 450 Rigby for my African hunt next year for the Cape Buff, Only problem is that it is going to take 10 months to come in apparently.

AFAIK Accuflite have the big bore Sako 85s in stock if someone in the USA is looking for one. That said, buying a rifle built by Accuflite on the Sako 85 action will likely be cheaper and perform better - if someone wants a hunting rifle and not a collector piece from Sako.

Have QGE made a typographical error in advertising them at $125 grand? Or is that right?

Ben

I think thats wrong mate, ours didnt cost anywhere near that there is three models as far as i know the top of the range has more engravings and the swarovski z6 on top for about 35 000 I believe, the second has less engravings however still has the z6 on top which is 24 000 and then there is the base model which we picked up that doesnt have a z6 which is about 11 and doesnt come with all the case and other fancy things that come with it

Good on you, Jameel. That sounds like a great rifle. Thanks for the extra information, too. I hope you can do a report when you get your rifle, and share some photos. And, good luck for the Africa trip!

Tophet 1

I spoke to the bloke that I ordered it off this morning, and he said that he can get ammo from norma its a bit expensive though being $280 for 10 pills, I was thinking of getting the reloading gear and loading my own with my pop. I think that it would make it that bit more special taking a cape buff with ammo loaded from my Pop and hunting it with my dad.

Ben

No problems mate, Ill get onto it as soon as it comes in, I went a bit crazy down at horsley park the other day, reading about all these big bores on this forum I didnt own one before I walked in the shop and came out with a CZ 550 in 458 wm and a Sako Safari 450 rigby, haha I need to stay away from gunshops for a while.

Jameel, that's awesome! Welcome to the world of big bores! Yep, get into reloading, ask plenty of questions here; it isn't too hard if you're careful, and it is cheaper and most-importantly it is very satisfying.
