J&L Wilkins double
      #184947 - 01/07/11 12:48 AM

Does anyone have info on the J&L Wilkins company out of Birmingham, England? I know Gulf Breeze Firearms sold a .700 NE a while back, but I can't find out much about them. Wilkins is the name - not Wilks who also made doubles.

I believe it was a partnership started back in the mid 80's between an American and an Indonesian . The Indonesian was from a rich family and he was the money behind it. They built the second ever 700 NE, right after the Holland.

I think they bought parts and assembled them, doing the fit and finish at their shop. Both gentlemen were knowledgeable about Doubles but neither was a gunsmith.

They built at least four 700 NE and at least one 4 Bore and one 8 Bore. I do not know how many other rifles, if any they made.

the Company name was Wilkins although I can't vouch for the name JL in my ramblings.

Long gone now I think.

Thanks all. Sounds like the Wilkins .700 NE that Gulf Breeze sold a while back is an orphan.

they also made a few bolt rifles which did look pretty good,,were for sale awhile at the 7-8000k range at champlins if i remember correctly then sold and resurfaced for 15k,,from what i understand they were guns built in england by different gunsmiths and sold under the jl wilkins name which was made up and sounded like a nice name for a british gun...paul

They made two doubles in 7 nitro.both were sold by cabalas a couple of years ago. They both went for app.60000 dollar range. Both were very nice guns. One had a no e custom case and several custom tools and accessories with it. Wilkes has made several other doubles in various calibers. All the doubles are better very nicely finished guns..

J & L wilkins was a "shelf name" used to offer a number of double rifles and magazine rifles sometime in the early to mid 1990's the person behid the name was Chris Soysa a Robotics engineeer from Indonesia who is now involved with Westley Richards in Birmingham England.

Chris has long traded in fine rifles both here and in the USA with a US based partner named Dick Correnti.

Much of the work was done in the UK guntrade by independent makers, Bob Harvey and Trevor Proctor being at least two of those who did work on and off.

To my knowledge no Wilkins guns have been made in recent times and those appearing for sale are going to be at least 12 years old if not much more.

Chris can be contacted at Westley Richards.

Best

Here's a discussion of a J.L. Wilkins .700 NE that appeared on this forum three years ago:

Some nice photos too.

Thanks all. The Wilkins and Robert Petersen's .700 H&H will appear in the next issue of Dangerous Game Hunting Magazine. You can read how I shot myself with a Searcy .700. No BS, Butch can verify as he was there.
