Good boar there Mick!

That Winchester is a nice bit of kit.

I wish my super grade 458 had a nice bit of wood on it.

Hunt hard and enjoy the adventure.

Hi Mick,

Great practice hunting pigs with the .458.

And good fun even if not "practice".

Seeing the bracelets, I have to ask, have you taken an ele with the .458?

If so, tell us about it. If not, no problem, they are good little souveneirs and curios.

Irrespective of that, I like those ele tail hair bracelets of yours, I have some, but mine are no where near as good, being made way too short and narrow.

Interesting even though a lot of people knock the standard .458 Win as not having enough grunt, a lot of PH's, including good ones, use it still. No problem if the cases are loaded to proper ballistics.

Its good to see your hunts, living up in the NT. Thanks for posting the photos and short story.

Nitrox- no havnt taken elephant. Havnt even been to africa. The .458 came about after a client bought one over for a buff hunt. It was a Styer Fullwood, it worked well, with winchester factory ammo.
A mate came up for a hunt and I got him onto a great bull with a .375 rimmed, and had some serious problems dropping him.(projectiles shed jackets).
He had a mauser .458 in bits that he couldnt get licensed in WA so he gave it to me as a back up gun. Ramline stock 22 inch barrel and nasty to shoot, but it killed well.
Moved back West for a period and gave it to another mate so when I came back from WA needed another so waited for a winchester to turn up ........
The braclete's well that came about from the manager at the croc farm having one and asked what the story was about them. He had come over from Rhodesia with Rob Mann of Nimrod safaris and bought his with him from guiding there. Also had a nice english double in 450/400.
When a client asked if there was anything I wanted I asked about the braclets and one bought some out for me.
They are a prized possesion.
As for .458 performance, ive found it works well and loaded with woodleigh projectiles it does the job on buff.
I practice with it as open sights and limited hunting range puts a bit of fun back into chasing pigs. Recoil is a issue for me, with the 500 grain loads.
Hope to get into some good bulls later in the year with it. Mick
