Hi, I recently purchased a brand new Rem XCR II in 375 H&H for an Alaskan brown bear hunt this fall that had some issues right out of the box. The extractor was a bit too large so it chambered factory rounds very hard, so I took it to my local and excellent gunsmith, Kevin Weaver, and am having it worked over (good thing I got it cheap!). He replaced the extractor with a Sako extractor, welded the bolt handle on, and I had him rechamber it to 375 Weatherby. I should get it back this weekend. 300g Nosler Partitions at 2800 fps from a 7 3/8 lb rifle (that includes scope!) should be fun. Recoil as a 375 H&H was mild so the 375 Weatherby should only be about 10% more recoil.

Chuck,
We are going to need to see some pictures of the rifle and cartridge if you can please?
And obviously, a pic of the brown bear you nail with it later on.

Chuck, Kevin's an excellent gun smith, this, according to my friends on a small bore forum who like to use him a lot.

Hornady's manual lists 2,800 with 270's and 2,700fps with 300's, from a 24" WTBY Mk IV in the .375 WTBY magnum.

I've seen other data for 270gr. as high as 2,900fps, but 300's reached only 2,750fps from the same rifle. Much depends on the bullet's bearing surface and composition when producing pressures, along with how individual rifles handle pressure. Some are fast, while others slow and everything in between.

Here's a picture of my rifle with a Leupold Firedot 2-7x33mm scope on it. 2700 fps with a 300g Partition should do just fine on most anything I plan to shoot with it. I have a 500 Jeffery for the really big stuff lol ...

I shot a gopher with my .375 H&H once. I didn't need the higher speed of the blown-out case.

I did the same thing, and all that was left was a hairy doughnut.

Mine stopped under the skin, between the back bone and the hide - no exit. The bullet struck the ground in front of the gopher, plowed a groove, then angled up and hit him in the belly, penetrated through guts, upwards, through the spine but stopped up behind his front legs under the hide - funniest thing you ever saw. Launched him 12' in the air, to land on his back, both feet straight up, not a twitch.

So - the moral of this story is that the .375H&H will not go through a gopher - I saw it happen.

In this instance, the .375 WTBY Improved probably would not have helped the 275gr. cast bullet's penetration.

Well when I hunt gophers I bring out the 500 Jeffery. It just scares them to death ...

Either ought to kill a bear if you hit him right! Good choice for coastal browns, I'd think. Some would say there is no such thing as overkill on them. I think I agree.

The 375 Weatherby did just fine on nice 8 1/2 foot brown bear, of course at 13 yards for the first and killing shot (a frontal quartering shot that broke the left front shoulder, destroyed both lungs and ended up in the far hide in front of the left rear leg), I didn't quite need the extra range the Weatherby brings. The bear somersaulted twice, roared and went into the willows. We waited 40 minutes then crawled through the willows following the blood trail. A tense 10 minutes and 30 yards later we found my bear dead in a little black bog in the willows. During those 10 minutes, I would've kinda liked my 500 Jeffery with open sights only in my hands ...

A great hunt, great location (Upper Togiak Lake), great outfitter (John Peterson of Bristol Bay Outfitters) and great guide (Jason Fawcett).
