Has he been found since? If not, probably not much hope.

Zero..dead under the circumstances if one is a realist.

There has to have been an injury to him perhaps by fall I reckon for him to have not walked out.Maybe a h/attack/I have hunted there and its not a super isolated place, rough, cold and wet yes but an uninjured experienced hunter should be able to walk out to farmland in hours thus one would say he was incapacitated to some degree.

If he's hunting the western side then it's hard work even for the very fit. The eastern side runs into farmland and is much easier.

Family concede no hope of finding missing hunter
Updated 20 minutes ago

The search for David Prideaux, the general manager of Victoria's Barwon Prison, is being wound up.

Mr Prideaux's family met at the Tomahawk Hut between Mansfield and Mount Buller for the final time today ahead of forecast bad weather later in the week.

Mr Prideaux, 50, of Sunbury, was last seen eight days ago when he went deer hunting.

Sergeant Kevin Waters of Victoria Police says emergency crews have spent the past week searching in terrible conditions.

"The search and rescue believe this is top of scale for searching and weather was terrible, very bad," he said.

However police and DSE will continue patrols in the area and any new information will be acted upon.

Mr Prideaux's brother, Peter, praised the effort put in by the searchers.

"We climbed, we've descended, we've crawled," he said.

"We've looked everywhere to find our brother and unfortunately we haven't been able to locate him."

He says his brother was much-loved. Even prison inmates sent their regards to the family.

More snow is expected in the next few days and the gates to the area will be closed until late spring.

"He'll rest in this beautiful majestic area, these mountains that he loved so much," he said.

"He'll rest here over the winter months and we'll come back and find him in spring. I know he won't mind the stay."
