.376 Steyr final report.
      #183147 - 06/06/11 10:33 PM

Shot my .376 Steyr left hand Dakota this Saturday with the first hand-loads (270 Swift A-Frame, 64gr. BL-2) and scope sighted at 100 yards. This load makes 2450 fps and is well under 50k psi. It shoots a centered 2.0" group 2" high.

I could raise the velocity in an attempt to get 1 MOA, but want to keep the pressure below 50k.

I'm not quite the bench rest shooter I used to be, so I'm sure the rifle will perform better than the shooter ever can.

That load might be under 50,000CUP or CIP, but doubt very much it's under 50,000PSI. In that round, 48,000CUP is probably 55,000PSI.

The .376's maximum working pressure will probably be in the vicinity of 64,000PSI. It's capacity is just a couple grains higher than my .375/06IMP, which is 80gr. total water capacity.

I suspect 68.0gr.BLC2 might run some 2,650fps + from your barrel and tighten things up a bit. Your barrel seems a bit slow. 68.0gr. is what my 9.3x62 (78.0gr. capacity) likes and runs 2,675fps/270gr. in a 22" bl. That might be too high for some other 9.3x62's though as it's too high by 2gr. for my .375/06IMP - just goes to show you all rifles are different. I worked up to that from a 56.0gr. start.

What barrel length, Bonanza?

Per the Hodgdon reloading manual

270 GR. HDY SP Hodgdon BL-C(2) 64.0gr 2447 47,000 PSI / 66.0gr 2544 53,100 PSI

The BBL is 23.5"

Oh yeah - so it is. Both are very soft loads. I see they only go up to 60,200psi for max pressure with some other loads, but they do list 66.0gr. BLC2 with 270gr. at 53,100psi.

I see they load 66.0gr.BLC2 with 270gr. bullets in their 9.3x62 data @ a mere 2,548fps & 47,400CUP - wonder why they stopped at that pressure with the larger cased .376 Steyr? That does explain the lower pressure generated, though.

Have you chronographed it?

I shot it yesterday with 66 grains of BLC-2 (2544 fps) and brought the group down to a respectable 0.69".

Excellent accuracy for a BIG game rifle.
