Sidelock DR rebuilding project?
      #182926 - 31/05/11 07:49 PM

Is there any mileage to be had out of this, or is it more likely to be a cash black hole?

THE MAJOR PARTS OF A .360 'NO.2' NITRO EXPRESS SIDELOCK NON-EJECTOR DOUBLE RIFLE, serial no. 14321,
barrels available for sleeving purposes retaining sight rib, folding leaf sights for 100, 200 and 300 yards with silver-inlaid sighting lines, telescopic sight mount bases, tubes originally engraved ' JOSEPH LANG & SON. 7, BURY STREET. ST. JAMES'S. LONDON. .360 NO.2 55 GRS. CORDITE 320 GRAIN BULLET.', treble-grip action with removable striker discs, elongated top-strap, bolted automatic safety with gold-inlaid 'SAFE' detail, gold-inlaid cocking-indicators, double set triggers, best fine bouquet and scroll engraving, retaining much original colour-hardening and finish, retaining fore-end, steel pistolgrip-cap and part of the head of the stock

Nice sidelock on a good action.

Saw that one, and thought about the same thing...

Could be a very fun project, but would be LONG and quite $$$.

I only wish...

If it was a boxlock I wouldn't bother but the sidelock aspect of it makes it interesting.

That's just my HO though.

I have commissioned some rebuilds but nothing as involved as this one.
In my experience, it is very easy to outstrip the value of a gun in the restoration process. This one would be a big $$$ job to do it properly and up to a standard equal to the action.

That is so true and something a lot of people seem to forget.

Also applies to why Custom build guns (Bolt Actions) never seem to recoup the build $ when re sold.

This is all very true.

Another other option is to be ruthless and replace the main, top lever and sear springs, pins and swivels, etc. soften, re-harden and re-colour the action, new barrels and stock. Definitely a long-term and expensive project... but resulting in a 'new' re-built rifle on a classic action at lower cost than a newly built rifle on a new action (also saving on VAT !), but admittedly at greater cost than the 'value' of a restored rifle.

I think I have a good handle on action and stock work costs and who could do it, but its the barrels and regulation that I am not sure of and probably the killer...

Perhaps a super mag 28 paradox!

That's a really neat little action, another pair of set triggers too!
The cost would be high, but the result could be great, whatever caliber it's built to run.

Cheers

The side-lever sidelock Grant in the same auction is just begging to be put right!
Lot #1504
What a beauty!

Depends on the costs. The action hinge pin removable or fixed? If there is enough fresh material left, re-bore the barrels, or have a new set of barrels made in Germany, Belgium, Spain or Italy. My preference would be 9,3x74R

By reading the description, I think the barrels have or must be chopped.

The action is quite a large one being for the 360 No 2 (effectively a 450).

I haven't done an extensive search, but a good maker that I trust will charge about £15K for new barrels fitted and regulated.
At those prices and with top grade wood (stock and new fore-end), that would make a full re-build cost just under (cough!) £30K including buying the action....
It would effectively be a brand new rifle though...
What would German, Belgian or Spanish work cost, out of interest?

I could get a new set of barrels for Aus $11k, made by an Ex Purdey worker.
