The Pieper Rifle.
      #182685 - 28/05/11 12:47 PM

I am hoping someone can assist me with some answers about a rifle I have just picked up. On the top of the octagonal Barrel is marked "The Pieper Rifle" 44WCF. It is a Martini Action, and it appears to have a cocking indicater simliar to many BSA martini actions. BUT this one is checkered on the top and by pushing it forward one is able to decock the action or by pushing it back the action can be cocked. The Bore is mint condition, no pitting and very strong visible rifleing. The stock has very nice wood in great condition. A four digit serial number. The original sights are missing and someone had attached a period aperture site and a fine front sight. I know pieper made many different firearsm in Liege, but I can not find much on this rifel. 1. When was it made? 2. Is it nitro proof? There is no load stamped on the barrel or action as many martinis have. Any help would be appreciated.

Probably of the Francotte design and maybe sourced from that firm??? Any proofmarks on the underside of the tube?

Kind Regards,

ellenbr.
Thanks you for that. I have foundout that it was made by one Henri Pieper of Liege, Belgium in the late 1800s. The Proof Mark is the letter "R" with a CROWN on top of it which I think indicates that it is proofed for nitro powders. Pieper designed several hand guns, shotguns, macnine guns and rifles. There is very little information on him. Can you help with the proof mark?

elvas.

Thank you so much for that. That is my rifle, the wood on mine is higher grade and it is 44WCF. A very interesting rifle. Appreciate your help. Wayne

Crown over R denotes rifle and more than likely is post 1897 for your example:

List of Belgian proofmarks.

Thank you, having the proof marks will make it a bit clearer. Out with the magnifying glass.
