What size action for what caliber?
      #182631 - 27/05/11 11:04 AM

Hey Guys,

Hypothetically speaking.....er uh, thinking....

If you were going to build a 9.3x74r would you put it on a 12 gauge frame or a 20 gauge frame?

If you were going to build a 30-30 double, would you put it on a 20 gauge frame or go larger?

What are your thoughts?

Thanks for your feedback.

JT

I am currently building a 9.3x74R on a BRNO ZP-47, 16 bore and think that the 16 is just about perfect for it. The .303 British that I built, and which is basically the same head size as a .30-30, is on a 20-bore and again it worked out beautifully.

Hey JT.

If I should build a double rifle in calibre 9.3x74r, I would use the 20 gauge frame, otherwise the barrels would be to heavy.

In earlier days Merkel used a 20 frame for rifles in that calibre, now they often use a 28 frame.

I had asked this very same question some time ago specifically regarding the 30-30. With the help and advice of members here and elsewhere I came to the conclusion that a 20-28 guage is about perfect for the 30-30 depending on the maker and size of the donor action. I start gunsmithing school on the 23rd of August and plan to build this very gun as my project in the 2nd or 3rd semester. I have consulted with the department director and I plan to use a Stoeger action as the donor. I will look at the 20 and 28 guage side by side and decide at that time which to use. We are required to build a BP gun first but we can do anything we wish after that.

In Belgium, 20 gauge actions are being used regulary to build 9,3x74R rifles. They stand the Belgium proof load (not always though)and are an alternative to a real express rifle. Mostly these rifles are bought by occasional hunters who never fire more than 100 rounds in their life.
Greetings,
Livinus

I doin't know anything about building shotgun to rifles but couldn't a 410's barrels be lined to 30/30 without to much work or is the 410 just not up to hokding the presser of the 30/30? just asking. Tom

The strength of the action matters as much if not more than the strength of the barrels . The pressure of .410 shell is in the 12000 psi range , the 30/30 runs closer to 40000 . Also the size and weight of finished rifle is a concern . I havent built anything ....yet , but I dont think I would build a 30/30 on a .410 shotgun . A .22rf might be cool . There are many here much smarter and more experienced than I . What say you ?
