I recently purchased a INMARSAT "ISATPONE PRO" Satellite Phone.
Figured it was about time to "bite the bullet" particularly that now I have my father joining me on Safari. Plus he can go shares in it..
The cost was roughly $800 with case and 100min air. The Air time lasts for two years but you can bump it up an additional two years just by adding some more $$ prior to the expiry date.
Their coverage seems quite good with exclusions including the Poles and northern Alaska.
The Inmarsat also gives a GPS position if required.
I also looked at the cheaper Theraya and Theraya Pro but the coverage does not cover the southern part of Africa, Tasmania and the Americas.

A bit of both plus my folks can use it on their trips away.

Bought it from Magnum Sports in Sydney.

They are quite valuable when you're hunting the desert country under your own steam. Any Outback country, for that matter.

Absolutely, My hunting mate also bought one for his forays after Camels and Buffalo, not to mention his O,S trips.

My tip with satellite phones is don't move around once you are connected. They are much more sensitive to this than normal mobile phones.

Can it be used to send data too? Send and receive text messages? (may have asked you this previously?)

Someone mentioned in another thread some internet phones can have a normal mobile card or chip inserted and also be used as a mobile phone where there is service.

Can your's do this?

I'm keen to hear your report(s) on how it works. I considered buying a satphone last year, then tried to hire one, but they were all hired out at the time I needed.

I see from the site:

Quote:

IsatPhone Pro is Inmarsat’s own-designed and manufactured satellite phone, offering clear voice telephony, globally. It also comes with a variety of data capabilities, including SMS, short message emailing and GPS look-up-and-send, as well as supporting a data service of up to 20kbps.

I've always found SMS very useful when travelling especially across different time zones.

You can send Text messages but can not be used as a standard Mobile phone. Iridium offers a duel type phone but costs over $1000.
