Docter Optic red dot sight on a double
      #181346 - 12/05/11 02:49 AM

Good Day to All:

Does anyone here have a Docter Optic red dot sight mounted to their double?

If so, which model and how do you like it?

Kindest Regards,

Carpediem

I spoke to the Trijicon boys at SCI Oz earlier in the year, and they are keen for me to try one of theirs on a double rifle.

I think Docter makes one which is similar in function. I

Trijicon Aust believes they are an answer for people with lesser eyesight especially as people age.

They certainly aren't traditional, but if they work, why not? I want to have mine as QD though. And will probably see if it can be fitted to my less than traditional U/O Tikka/Valmet double rifle. If it works OK, I may use mine on the combination barrels I have in 12g/7x65R as well, as the red dot sight should function OK - subject to testing - with the shotgun as well using shot.

I can use open express sights well, but may need glasses soon for somethings, probably due to too much damned computers!

I've got a Burris Fastfire 2 Red Dot Sight on my Westley Richards 450/400. My eyes started failing and I still needed to use my double so I opted for the red dot sight. Not wanting to spend to much money on the Doctor Optik sight (it is very expensive here in South Africa) I went with the cheaper Burris option to first determine whether it would work for me. Well, I can tell you it has changed the way I hunt. It works perfectly, at 60m both 2 shots from each barrel shoot inside of 1". The rifle was always slightly high for me so with the new sight installed, it works to my benefit. The installation was interesting: the locking screw removed and the existing sights can be removed. Two 't' plates are installed from either side with 2 allen screws to fit perfectly over the existing rib. The piccaninni Burris then gets installed on that. I do have pictures but don't know how to post. In a matter of seconds I can installed either the new sight or the original, and it zeros every time. A buffalo has since fallen to this rifle.
Regards,
Charl

BTW I see don't have any mount bases for this Trijicon sight. Trijicon seems to have a zero service attitude.

I think the word you were looking for is "Picatinny" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Picatinny, rather than "piccaninni" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pickaninny.

"Picatinny" refers to the US government arsenal, where the Picatinny scope mount base was developed.

These types of sights are very popular in Europe on double rifles for driven boar hunting. I've used a couple of loaner rifles with them in the past and they work well for moving targets, very fast pick up.

I had a look at a very lovely Heym double rifle in .375 Flanged fitted especially with a Docter Red Dot sight in April. One of our member's rifles being built by Heym. It is a real beauty of a rifle and the member intends it for driven boar hunting. I have a picture to post of it. (elsewhere on the forums)
