Any Fans of the 260 Remington Here?
      #180284 - 29/04/11 12:26 PM

I've been offered a pretty good deal on an H-S Precision SPL in .260 Remington. Currently own 7mm-08 and 6.5x55 rifles (Ruger 77's) that the boys usually hunt with, but this SPL is done "right" and seems like it would make one hell of a great deer rifle.

The selection of factory .260 Rem ammo is sparse and my time is limited to the point that I avoid handloading unless I really, really have to. Anyone have any compelling arguments for (or against) this cartridge? Seems like it won't do any less, or any more, than the 6.5x55 but the range of available factory Swede ammo is far better. I've got a pile of 7mm-08 ammo and would probably grab the SPL in a heartbeat if it was chambered that way.

I built a .260 Rem. for my Daugther some time ago, using a 1950 Mauser 98 action and a Lawrence barrel, 26" long, on a Boyds grey laminate stock.

Jeff L. sent the barrel (no threads) but chambered it some .143" deeper than perfect which meant I needed to cut some from the breech end before turning threads for headspacing to that action. Instead, I simply threaded it up and made brass to fit the overly long chamber by sizing 7x57 brass down for .264" bullets, trimming to length and fireforming - a new Wildcat was born, the .260 CLC (Carol's little Ctg.) - the style in naming curtosy of Layne Simpson, gun writer and wildcatter.

This ctg. deveoped 3,308fps with 120gr. Barnes XLC's - not too shabby. Every bullet eight from 85gr. to 160's shot into 1/2" or better - a good barrel. The 60gr. capacity (same as a 6.5x284) case turned out to be quite efficient, matching my .264 Win. Mag. for speed at that time. This is just to show what's possible with a basic .260 Rem. (or any other where feasable) chambering reamer.

After some testing, I shortened the barrel so it headspaced perfectly on factory RP 260 Rem. ammo - she finally had her .260 Remington, about a 55gr. capacity case.

The .260 does 3,000fps with the same 120gr. XLC's, BTW, and still shoots into 1/2" with about every bullet weight with max. loads. If the stock was 1" longer, I'd be hunting with it myself, when she's at work, up in the frozen North. It's a dandy little ctg., albeit smaller than I normally reach for.

Last time at the range, she made a 10 shot group at 100 meters (109yds) of 1 3/4". 8 of those 10 shots were inside 1 1/4". The target was a flat-black deer silhouette, with no discernable markings. She asked where to shoot it, and I merely said kill the deer. Her groups was perfectly place, to miss the leg bone at the bend, but catch centre of the lungs. Best part, is she shot off her elbows off a table, sitting, of course - no bags, no solid rest - she did have the benefit of a 2.5-10X scope, taped off at 4X.

The second best part of this shooting test, is the light load she shot would only give me 1 1/8" off the bags for 5 shots with good bench posture. The load was easy for her to shoot, as it barely made 2,200fps with the 160gr. 34.0gr. H4895 with 160gr. Sierra - about the same as a 6.5x54 MS factory load. Plenty good enough when you think about it.

All of this is just to show it's a wonderful round and can easily run the gammut from 1900's 6.5mm ballistics to 2011 ballistics yet deliver excellent accuracy while doing it all.

Even a young lass who's fired less than 300 rounds total, in her life, can shoot this round accurately while being powerful enough for anything we've got here.

Is it a ladies or young lad's ctg.? It certainly can be as described and loaded, but in full stride, it's a man's rifle for just about anything you want to hunt. 140's make 2,860fps, with 160's being happy up to just over 2,600fps. A descent barrel length of course, helps in velocity.

Reloader 19 is a great powder for full powered loads, btw, in both the .260 and the .260 CLC. This round is one of the easiest to load for as well, as about any mid range or slow powder can be used - any .308 basic case can be utilized as well, from .358 Win, .338 Fed, .308Win., 7.62x51 Nato, 7mm/08, .260, or .243.

Thanks Daryl- great information. Do you recall what the twist rate on your barrel was? I've heard / read that some factory 260's don't do well with 160-grain bullets. Maybe I'm old fashioned or narrow-minded, but I really like heavy-for-caliber bullet weights and think the 155 to 160-grain area could elevate the 260 beyond "deer rifle".

Of course that means knocking the dust off the reloading equipment, but Eldest Son has been showing some interest there...maybe I can make it "his rifle" long enough to get a supply of ammunition worked up???

My first experience with the .260 Remington was back in the '50's when it was referred to as the .263 Express and was invented by Kenneth Waters, by necking the .308 Winchester case to hold a 6.5mm bullet. In my case, I had just bought a 6.5X50 Arisaka rifle which I wanted to somehow turn into a varmint rifle. My gunsmith obliged me by rechambering the flawless barrel with a .243 Winchester reamer. Despite the 7 1/2" twist, the little rifle (I still have it) shoots 90 grain Norma bullets like a dream, and functioned like an overgrown .243 afield after the wiley woodchuck (or groundhog, as it is referred to locally).

Years later, I had a second rifle built on a nice Oberndorf Mauser action, and it proved to be a tackdriver as well. Finally, I had two different target rifles built on Model 70 actions, the first as soon as cartridges other than .30-'06 and .308 became within the rules for highpower competition.

I think it is a marvellous little cartridge and would not hesitate to recommend it for anything its higher capacity cousins, the 6.5X55 and 6.5X57 are capable of.

Incidentally, isn't it interesting how Remington manages to legitimize a wildcat cartridge of long standing (.22-.250; .260 Remington; .35 Whelen) and then as likely as not fails to generate sales in it to any extent?

I am gathering the parts to build one, I have nearly everything. It is an excellent little cartridge and mild to shoot to boot!

Almost a .260 - I'm having a 6.5x47 Lapua built which I am hoping will be ideal for all my roe and fallow stalking here. I know people who use them happily for big lowland reds too. Not much difference between the two cartridges really - what's not to like!

You might try looking around this site (make sure to check the forums), the 260 has been gaining a lot of favor in long distance match shooting:

http://www.accurateshooter.com/

It seems the 260, 6.5x47 and 6.5 Creedmore are all fighting it out for the 6.5mm target crown. You could also give H-S a call and ask about the twist rate they use. They make nice rifles.

Good article on Don.

6.5x47 Lapua is interesting. When I first saw the 6.5x47 Lapua listed,I instantly thought of the original 6.5x47, which used the .222Rem Mag. case. My bad.

Interesting ctg. that Lapua, for intermediate range target shooting, ie: out to 600yards, it seems. It should also make a terrific prone and postion ctg.

The .260, which delivers just enough with heavier match bullets to be useful to 1,000yards, is also a good one for postion, recoiling less than the typical .308 and delivering higher BC bullets at the same time.

Daryl S, as you know I´m about to start reloading (when the .30-06 and the 6.5MS get here !!! prob 3 months more) what data do you have for the 6.5 MS with reloader 19 which I can easily get for a change, esp with a Barnes 140 TSX and a Hornady 160gr RN, cheers,
Mike

G'Day Fella's,

TAW1126, I have only recently received a new barrel in 6.5 x 47 Lapua for my switch barrel rifle.
I also have a project in place, to re-barrel a BSA Royal/Hunter(?) to 6.5-284.
So there is a chambering either side of the .260 Rem. I gave serious thought to both the Std .260 Rem and the .260 AI but went with the Lapua cartridge.

The .260 has a lot going for it but then, so does the 7-08 and the mighty .308 Win (Eh Toofa)!

Fella's, I learnt from my mistakes, a long time ago!
If all the bills are paid, if the pantry is full of food and there are enough clothes and shoes on every bodies back and feet. The worse thing you can say is, "Gee I Wish"!!!
Gee I Wish, I bought that rifle, Gee I Wish, I didn't sell that Shotgun, Gee I wish I went to that place, etc etc

Regret, is not a good thing, so..........

Hope that helps

Doh!

Mike - I would think you'd be better off staying with normal bullet in the 6.5x54 - the Premium's aren't needed for it's low velocities.

I have no data for it using Reloader #19. I only have Re#19 data for the .260Rem. and .260 CLC as noted. Also, I've never used a 140gr TSX.

The old Lyman books have 6.5x54 data, but they used mostly Hodgdon Ball and IMR stick powders. That data I can give you, however note that some powders have changed somewhat over the years. Let me know what 'normal' NA powders you have access to and I'll lookup some loads for you.

Oh - check reloading.com - bet there is data there for the 6.5x54.

Either of the IMR's in 4895's, 3031, 4320, 4064, along with Hodgdon H380, H335, BLC2 - those are pretty much what the old Lyman books have. Maybe the new Lyman book has some data, I'll check.
