questions on 22 hornet build
      #180184 - 28/04/11 10:59 AM

to start with, a little background. i've been a reloader, bullet caster, and shooter for over 20 years. i've build many sporting and target rifles on remington and mauser actions. now i want to try a double in 22 hornet. this is just for fun as a plinking/rodent gun and will be shot with cast bullets. any advice you can give would be great. i am trying to keep the price down as this is my first attempt. i can make a real beauty later on.

i think i want to start with a 410 SXS. i probably would choose a baikal or stoeger as the price is less and this is a low pressure round. i plan on cutting the barrels ahead of the chamber to make a monoblock, then pulling the ribs to reuse. my next step would be barrels. i am considering using takeoff factory ruger 10/22 barrels, or would i be better off using remington 223 barrels? i like the idea of the 10/22 barrels as they are lighter weight. i do have a lathe, so i would machine the barrel stubs to fit the monoblock snugly. i figured i would jig the barrels up on a true flat surface to ensure i get the barrels paralell, and figure the side to side out using math. i plan on soldering the barrels into the monoblock, then solder the ribs, sights, etc.

does this sound like i'm heading in the right direction? am i missing any critical steps?

thanks!

Welcome to NE hornsurgeon.

A professional build of just such a rifle (from scratch) was documented here on NE not so long ago. If you do a search no doubt you will have some of your questions answered. I'll try to post a link if I find it myself.

(I'm a fan of the .218Bee myself but hey, what do I know ?)

Have you gotten the book from Ellis Brown about building double rifles? It might shed some light on the subject.

Do a search in this double rifle gunmaking forum.

Alan McKenzie posted a photo of a .410 shotgun made into a rimfire in WA.

Baily Bradshaw had at least one thread on a .22 rimfire (?) and maybe a .22 Hornet (?), with a from scratch double rifle build.

Maybe another thread too.

A .22 Hornet Double rifle would be cool and I project I would still like at some point to look at myself - though not me building it!

I have two threads on this site, one about my .22 Hornet build and one about my .303, which has lots of pictures. Between the two they should help you some. Keep in mind, if you use .22 rimfire barrels, as I did, then you need to size your cast bullets to .222" or .223". You'll never get the ribs off a Baikal or a Stoeger gun in useable condition, unless you have a furnace. Those guns are oven-brazed and even oxy-acetylene won't do it. I know, cuz I've tried!!

thanks for the heads up on the ribs, i would never have expected that. i can only imagine the mess that caused. i'm thinking either i need to make ribs or do this as liners instead. or maybe i'll luck out and find a better donor gun for a low price.

Ideally, what you want is a Spanish-built .410. Unfortunately. they're not that easy to find used, at an attractive price. I can vouch for the Laurona as I built a .303 on a 20-bore and it is still tight as a drum after 1000's of rounds. Also, they have some desireable features for a rifle, like disc-set strikers, a breech reinforce, often they have side clips, double triggers, etc.

I bought a Yildiz 410 SxS recently for just such a project. It is quite a nice little gun with a single trigger with mechanical operation for the second barrel. It has a double underbite action but does not have a 3rd bite. I have done a few calculations and all seems fine. I am doing mine in 22K Hornet as I will be able to get normal ballistics at lower pressure. I plan on working up a low pressure load in my bolt action K Hornet with a 35Gr Hornafy V Max at about 2700fps and regulating the rifle for that. I will be building a monobloc rather than chopping the existing barrels so I will have the best of both worlds. Good luck with your project!
