Which gun case?
      #180111 - 27/04/11 07:21 PM

I'm tossing up the idea of having a gun case made for one or more of my rifles.

Let's start with the Jeffery .450.

Should one get a nice leather, wood and felt case for it as is traditional,

or

A more modern versatile for modern travel aluminium case, also with dividers etc for the rifle?

I like the original, but can't imagine using it for airline travel. The aluminium one is far less pretty, not in sync with a vintage double rifle, but won't get banged up and will protect the rifle better when flying.

What do you think?

The modern one will be lighter as well.

Hi John,

You can have the best of both worlds, have a look at this site.: http://www.emmebi.it/eng/

Having had several made by them, they will make it to suit the specific rifle and accessories. They ask you to trace the various components as a template in the configuration that you choose. They will also send at no charge "Samples" of the leather colors, as well as either the felt or their artificial type lining. This will give you the "Old School" gun case and when you go to Africa or elsewhere, the case can be placed into an airline approved "Pelican Case" and depending on what you want to take in addition, there is a "Pelican Case" in the size that will suit. If your interested, ask for "Aimo" who is very helpful and follows your instructions and order all the way through.

Cheers,

Jeff Gray

I forgot, they do have some "Trade Labels" and will fit it on to the case lid if they have the correct one to suit your rifle.

Thanks for that Jeff. Good idea.

A problem with that might be the overall weight however. If the DR is already heavy, a case in a case, may well double the case weight.

Having a Pelican case with simpler foam cut outs might be better for travel anyway ie re weight.

If you want a gun slip, for vehicle use as well, that's another extra weight.

The traditional case is so appropriate for a vintage rifle however, so your answer in your post is one potential good compromise.

John,an answer to your needs would be take the foam out of your hard case and put your padded gun bag in it.
Then you have your gun slip for traveling in the vehicle.

Did this with both my trips to Africa. Not authentic, but practical.

Hi John,

It really depends if you want to show your rifle in it's "Old World" charm when you open up the Pelican Case. I agree about the foam aspect. In my opinion the foam supplied in the case leaves a lot to be desired so I got onto a high density foam in 3 thicknesses, Lid, Base and Cutout this way I only have to modify the center piece to whatever rifle configuration I want to take as this foam is machinable, I just used a jigsaw.

The current configuration is for "Father & Son" and the 2 S&B scopes in the cutout's and in the "Base" foam I inlet the shooting sticks and cleaning gear and all up is 22kg including the case which is under the required maximum weight.

I have been playing with this weight problem and am considering taking the 2 scopes as "Carry On" along with the Cameras & Binoculars as I can have 2 x 7kg bags as "Carry On" which saves about 3kg in scopes and mounts in the "Checked" baggage and I will then pre purchase another 10kg and the Pelican will only be 20kg and still leaves room for "Gifts" on the way back as I will leave the ammo with is 3.2kg

If you need this type of foam for yourself, I will look up what they call it and send the details to you.

Cheers for now,

Jeff Gray

Yeah, I've done that and more so fitted two double rifles in one single rifle full length case!

I wasn't happy or felt secure about how the case would survive the journey, especially considering the total weight. Also it was a cheapie with non-cheapies inside. It survived unscathed, but won't do that again.

Jeff,

Thanks for that English link. I saw it previously but not the English button to the Top Left. The Italian was not so easy!

I've used a Negrini case for air travel and so far haven't run into problem, however I do pad the scope within the case

Nitro, I have Rolly at Lane Leather making me an "exhibition" case for my pair of doubles, scope etc, Mike Marsh on the tools BUT when these guns go with me to the Selous in Sept I have had 5 star in England make me a double case for airport use, do you want some photos ? The single case for a pair saves space, important on a little charter to somewhere in the middle of nowhere, best

The answer is you need both. A nice oak and leather to display the gun and to haul around to the shooting range and BGRC Shoots and a good aluminum one to haul on the plane etc.

Mick

Of course that is the sensible and simple idea.

Perhaps get made up a versatile single aluminium case for a couple of barrels, two scopes etc, maybe even two butt stocks and it is the air travel case for everything that can be broken as required.

Ability to take a single DR, perhaps with a shotgun, a Tikka U/O with two barrels, two DRs, two shotguns etc.

And then get made up or acquire a suitable case for DRs or Shotguns that deserve them.

Jeff , I have tried the scope carry on bit a couple of times , way back in the 90's it was Ok , but now does not work a lot of the time & if trying connecting flights could put you behind as you can't argue with them !

Worse if it's a women !

Hi Sarg,

Although it is a direct flight both ways, I guess for a small saving in $$ I guess that if your going to loose 2 S&B scopes you might as well loose the $18k rifles as well. As for.:

It's strange that this should come up now. I went to a custom case maker yesterday and have him making me a lightweight aluminum shell, lockable of course, inside of which my canvas and leather double rifle cases will just fit. I'm off to the Kalahari in September for a plains-game hunt, want to take my .303 double in its fitted case, but wouldn't trust it unprotected to the baggage-handling gorillas!!

I have been to this movie and have the scars (at least the gun does). I have and like the traditional oak and leather cases a lot but they are not the thing to travel with in this day and age. They were made for the day when your case was carefully put by you in the first class overhead compartment. Among other things, the internal partitions are not strong enough even if you put inside a pelican case. That said, the pelican cases are great with the foam properly cut.

There is a simple test for a gun case for travel: Put your gun in it and lock it properly for travel. Take the case step up onto something about 3 or 4 feet high like a desk or pickup bed. Throw the case off onto a concrete surface. Go ahead and give it a good toss; a bounch or two is appropraite. Repeat four times. If you can do that without wincing the case and packing is good enough. Pelicans may be the only ones to pass that test; it is why the military uses them.

I have used several different types of cases in the last 20 years traveling to Africa with my "doubles" , the last few years I have been using a couple of "Americases" . I have one that will hold 2 doubles with scopes and another that carries 2 scoped rifles. These are very tough !!!!! I will take both of them to Zim in a few weeks. Not only will they pass the "drop test" you can drive a Land Rover over them !!!! I love the "oak and leather" cases , but keep them in the gun room and take the "Americase" when you travel.
