Re-barreling in the USA
      #180035 - 26/04/11 10:58 PM

Hi all,
I have wondered for a while about this and thought that this is as good a place to find out as anywhere.
What do you guys in the USA do if you need to have a best quality shotgun or double rifle rebarreled? As far as I have been able to find out, there isnt really anyone to do this work, especially with the O/Us.Are there a many Boss and Purdey O/Us out there, unused because they are in need of new barrels?
Hopefully someone will be able to answer this.

Kind regards

Mark

Mark,
If it was my gun that needed new barrels, I'd sleeve it myself whether it was a rifle or a shotgun. I have saved back several good chrome moly used barrels for just such an occasion. They were harvested from Beretta shotgun monoblocks that were converted by me to something else, usually a 45/70 or 20 gauge slug gun. Many are beyond help but some good ones can be reused.
Bob

Thanks for that Bob,but what I really wanted to know was if anyone could make a pair of barrels from chopperlump(side by side) or demiblock(O/U)tubes,machine and joint them then fit the ribs and finish them.It seems to me that there must be a good number of best quality guns in the USA with "out of proof" or very worn barrels that are not used anymore because they have become dangerous.Do people send them to the UK to be rebarreled or just put them away and forget about them?

Mark

Yes it is common to send them back to the UK. The larger British makers have agents here, or some go direct using a special shipper.

The "dangerous ones" (ie. Cheap) get snapped up, sent out and rebarreled, sleeved, or teague lined.

No doubt there are firms/people here that can and do this kind of work, but the SOP is to send 'em back to the UK.
