C & H SxS Action?
      #179923 - 25/04/11 12:30 PM

A question for the sxs rifle builders. I have a C & H Avant Toute boxlock in 12 gau., ejector, not much invested. Barrels are usable but not the great, stock needs work, the action and mechanics are in good condition. If you are not familiar, the action already has free floating firing pins which should be a plus even if they need to be bushed. How suitable would this action be for conversion to a sxs rifle? I was thinking .303 / 38.55 / a bore rifle in 20 gau / suggestions. Thanks for any input --- John303.

John,
A lot of the suitability would have to do with how old the gun is and how the floating pins are held in the action. Do they have screw-in bushings behind them or do they have holding screws that hold them in by coming in from the side into a knotch in the pin itself? The ones with the retaining screws tend to wear and if you are not careful,to blow out. I would think that a rifled 20 gauge would be fine, but here again, the overall condition of the gun is all important when trying to contain any extra pressure. I hate to appear ignorant, but I'm not familiar with this model of gun at all. Can you tell us more about it? Maybe send some closeup pictures? Bob H.

Doesn't the the C&H action have quite a short bar (as in the water table) compared to say a Webley ?

I haven't seen one for a while and can't picture it.

Not that you are looking at big cartridges anyway.

Maybe have a look at what C&H built guns on in the past.

To answer your questions - this particular action has the retaining screws which have a large head but very small threads I'd say about 1/16th of an inch thick, I'm thinking of making some that are larger, since one is somewhat compromised. The table is 2 inches long to the centre of the hinge and the barrels are steel not damascus, not ancient by any means. I really have no need for a "big" cartridge, likely deer are the very largest game I would be hunting. --- John303.
