Building a Case?
      #179476 - 20/04/11 08:40 AM

I hope nobody minds me asking here, but has anyone made there own case/box for their double?
I am not satisfied with the factory plastic box that came with my rifle. Up here my store bought options are very limited and are usually intended and branded for shotguns. I am planning to build my own, and have the design pretty much laid out - just looking for things to consider or watch out for from those members who have been down this road before.
Thanks for your time

It's cheaper to but one.

And you can buy blank cases as well which you can cover yourself.

Don't worry about the local guy, get on the net, hundreds of cases out there and find the people who have heaps of options
in regards to cases.

If you are looking at a case for an old English DR, the wood
partitions should be a certain shape.

And if you make one, make sure you use the right glue !!!

Hi Big J,

Unless your a cabinet maker it would be a PIA but I have seen various quality cases on websites in the US and you should not have any problem importing them. I prefer the Emmebi cases from Italy and have Imported several over the years. www.emmebi.it

If I can find the US companys, I will list later on but if you have a "Known" brand of D.R. Emmebi often has Trade Label to suit.

Cheers,

Jeff Gray

I have built a few cases for pairs of pistols for clients many years ago. It's a big job - quite fussy, and if you don't have pretty good cabinet making skills you will be very unhappy with the result. Building a full length case for a bolt action rifle and all the tools would be a really major job, if you wanted a quality product and not just a hinged wooden box. A double would be more doable, but still a few months of nights and weekends.

Check out Jeff's Outfitters - they have lots of cases. Also Connecticut Shotgun Mfg.

Huey Cases is probably the gold standard, and their website has tons of great photos to drool over and instruct you.

If you really want to build one, start with good, clear hardwood from a building store (Lowes and Home Depot in the US sell clear red oak in a variety of dimensions including partition and block thicknesses.)

Source some top quality wool baize (high end billiard cloth can substitute but it isn't the same). Hinges and corners can be had from a variety of sources such as Horton Brasses and Woodcraft Supply as well Abbey England. Leather can be obtained from a variety of sources including Tandy Leather, which has stores all over the place.

Tools and oil bottles can be had from Lewis Drake, Huey, Jeff's Outfitters, and ebay.

And my final advice for any of this traditionalist work: do your best to copy the best. Don't try to invent something new, or improve on it, or improvise, or "think outside the box". Find good work and studiously recreate it, and you'll be better off. That sounds like odd advice, but it comes from years of experience watching slow motion train wrecks.

Big J,

I've built several cases for bolt guns, as well as several cigar humidors. The one tip I would offer you is to build the box as one piece, then cut it apart. Boxes aren't the easiest thing to construct and have turn out properly. In the rifle cases I've built, I used solid brass piano hinges. Joinery of the corners is of utmost importance for strength and durability; consider your method carefully!

One other consideration is weight. It is very easy to wind up with a case that is excessively heavy.

Best of luck with your project!

George
