H &H 500 BPE Question
      #179426 - 19/04/11 02:11 PM

I have a Holland & Holland 500 BPE and I was hoping to get any info on the gun I can and also what you think the value might be. I have a letter from H & H dated 1984 that says they do not have any exact details on the gun but it is somewhere between 1879 and 1880. It is an underleaver gun and has Holland & Holland on each side behind the hammers. It has charge 4 1/4 drams case 3 inches on front of reciever. The serial # matches on bbl and reciver 5753 the other mark on botton of bbl is 39. The bore looks shiny with no pitting and rifling looks good. The bbl has no pitting anywhere but looks like it has been blued you can not see any damaskus which I assume it must be a damaskus bbl. The reciever is wore almost shiny with fine engraving but again no pitting or rust. The stock appears to be original with a few dings but not too bad. It has a wooden case which looks like quarter sawed oak with brass corners and velvet lined. the small doors on case appear to have ivry knobs. It has cleaning rod and attachments and 2 tools with it plus 2-5 round boxes of empty brass. Gun does not appear to be abused and is in excellent shape for its age.I will try to include some pictures. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Steve

You're going to have to bring it to one of our 'shoots'! Ak has a small but viable DR population. We're talking about one near Willow July 16. 4 bores downward. Your 500 would fit right in. Cal Pappas can do an apprasial on this rifle.

Sounds great. Who is Cal Pappas and where is he? I did not know there was much interest in doubles in Ak. I did not intend to keep this rifle but I am now thinking about selling my other double and keeping this one. I can not afford to keep both. The other is a new Merkel 500 NE. Thanks Steve

Cal lives in Willow and he's been playing with DR's old and older for many years. He recently wrote a book on 600 Nitro's.

Where are you at?

BTW, if you want to shoot this beast get a copy of Graheme Wright's book "Shooting the British Double Rifle" It's a mush have to understand there rifles. There's loads shown both black and smokeless too.

Good one Gadge,

Unlike Nigel's post trying to push people away from NE yet again, so many times the same sort of post, Cal Pappas is also a member of NE and can probably be contacted via PM.

Thanks Gadge for pointing that out.

cubdriver55,

How about posting some pictures of your guns? You must show them off - it is mandatory for double rifle owners aka owners of shooting treasures who sign up onto our forums! Don't keep a Holland and Holland BPE hidden away, please!

Welcome to the forums, and do participate often. Good hunting!
