264 Winchester Mag Interest
      #179369 - 18/04/11 10:04 PM

Who else shoots a 264 winchester mag. would be interested in any one elses experience, with this calibre. I run a winchester model 70 1974 model. It shoots well with 125 partitions and barnes 130tsx.
Mainly bought it to hunt fallow and it works well on them taken plenty of boars with it and it is great on the open floodplains. Heres some pics Mick
140gr factory winchester

125 partition

125 partition for meat.

I'll get some info, comments and load data up in a few days Mick.

Like you (as per PM) I get the feeling this calibre has been hard done by in the past with a lot of myths being perpetuated and regurgitated by 'gun' writers. Newer technology and products are making it more viable than ever before.

I've spent the last few days prep'ing mine for my camel hunt and I'm really starting to appreciate it.

I agree with you John.
At worst lets call it a barrel burner and call it good for 2000 rounds. That's still 5-10 years hunting for most people and at say $750 for a new barrel, that's $150 a year at the worst.

I have said elsewhere that if I had my time again I would build a 6.5x68,8x68 and a 10.75x68.
I think the 264win and 6.5x68 would be similar ?.

Good photo's Mick.

Peas in a pod, ballistics wise - 6.5x68 and .264WM. I had a 70's era .264 with a very slow barrel, that would only make 3,350fps with 120gr."X". Of course, there really aren't many flies on those speeds, but it should have done better.

The smaller cased .260 CLC (60gr. capacity same as .6.5x284) made 3,308fps with the same 120gr. "X" bullet.

In a factory ctg., the .264 gave a level of ballistics unmatched by other factory ctgs. until now, with the 6.5x284. Although more a target round, it should develop populatity for hunting.

High velocity 6.4's can be a death ray on lighter big game and still take heavy ungulates with appropriate bullets.

I would place the hunting accuracy barrel life (1 1/2" @ 100) of most .264's at 800 to 1,000 rounds - if cared for and cleaned properly - still more than most people will shoot in a lifetime of hunting with an 85gr. capacity ctg.

About 5 years ago I turned down a Winchester Pre-64 Westerner in 264 WM that was offered to me, the guy was asking $1000-00 AUD for it, and it was perfect.

Just another one of those rifles I've turned down, because of lack of cash, and regretted it ever since. (insert upside down smiley face here)

David.

I like the .264.

The Rodney Dangerfield of the gun world. Gets no respect.

Except here, and maybe on Nitroexpress.com.

I wanted and still secretly want a 6.5x68 which is the "original" .264 Win Mag.

Getting a 6.5x65 instead which is a slightly lesser retarded brother of the 68.

I like the idea of the 93 gr chamois and roe loading in the 68 mm.

I think it will be lots of fun and hopefully the rifle not too heavy.

Here is my 2nd hand 264WM.

It is way 'overbore' (or inefficient) in its use of current powders for velocity gained but there is just somthing attractive about the cartridge that has no scientific basis.

The 6.5mm family were first brought to my attention many years ago when an article was printed in a local Aussie shooting magazine about a West Australian owned Steyr Manlicher M-72 model S in 6.5x68. It was imported with two scopes, both Nickal Supras. A 4x32 (?) and a 3-12x56. Both interchangeable on Q/D monts. Like you John H, I was enamoured with it from the start and the article introduced me to Mannlichers, German cartridges, spoon bolt handles and Supra scopes. From memory the owner was going to use the 127 KS load, then handloads with a 125 partition. He too was intrigued with the 93 grain load and assumed it was used in europe for high altitude, long range Chamois and for Roe deer.

I purchased my rifle late last year through Tony Saros in Victoria who knew it's history. He assured me it had about 150 rounds through it, 200 maximum. I have heard storys of them only having a life of 800 rounds and have yet to find out if this is true. Tony has always hit me as an honest guy and I purchased the rifle sight unseen. According to the serial number it is a 1965 Remington 700 ADL with factory 24" stainless steel barrel. It was bedded and shoots extremely accurately.

My motivation in buying it was to build a long range (300-400 yard) Springbok rifle for my return trip to RSA in 2014.

I removed the bridge mount that was on it and it currently wears a Pic rail which allows correct eye relief for my Kahles 3.5-10x50 scope. Before its arrival I ordered a pre screwed and chambered Pac-Nor C/M 26" super match grade barrel for eventual replacement of the factory barrel. This barrel is longer, and has only a slightly larger profile than the factory profile. Plans are for a target shaped stock to add forend weight, the new barrel, new and softer recoil pad and a modified M-8 Leupold 12x40AO scope with click adjustment turrets and LR Duplex reticle.

Accuracy is so good at the moment that I am loath to replace the barrel. I have an accurate load with 2213sc and the 129 Hornady SST (3,140fps) and also the 140 Woodleigh PPSN (3,014fps). Loads are way over published maximums but primers are convex and there is no resistance to bolt lift or extraction. I am very careful to let it cool down after three shots as it heats up very quickly.

It will get its first blooding on feral Camels in mid June.

My first .264 was back in the 70's. It blew up a bunch of groundhogs for me, but I had to let it cool for 1/2 hour after every 3 or 4 shots. My 6.5 Rem. Mag did almost as well, gave very similar speeds to the 22" .264 mag., was more accurate & used less powder.

In the mid 80's, I rechambered a 6.5x55 to .6.5x68 on a new M96 Swede. Brand new barrel. Yes I know it can't be done - it's toolong, too much presssure adnausium. According to Ackley, a certain Dr. Arch did a .264WinMag and so I did a 6.5x68. I kept my loads 100fps lighter than my buddy's P14, so only went to 82gr.(or something like that) H870 with 129 Hornady's for 3,200fps. He was getting 3,300fps with them.

It shot splendidly, and I once blew up 2 snowshoe hares at 210 & 220 yards (10 yds. apart, in line) with one shot.

Since these two ctg. are ballistic peas in a pod (normal 12" twist for the 68mm, 9" for the .264) wht can be said for one equals the other. I spotted for Keith once, on a bull elk - 275 yards, bullet 129gr. Hornady, 3,300fps MV. At the shot, red spray blew out the entrance hole and exit hole at the same time, perfect broadside shot, 1/2 way up the beast's rib cage for a moderately high lung shot.

Pretty good performance for a 'soft' bullet. He had to use the 129's as heavier bullets were too long for the rifling twist. He's since gone to 9" for his 6.5 X 68's.

The big cased 6.5's good, but go through a barrel a bit fast for someone who shoots a lot.

A 6.5 with 57mm length case with 60gr. capacity will about duplicate their peformance and last at least twice as long.
