Grant choose the calibre and go for it. The ruger #1 are so versitile. I use one in 45-70 for group 1 BGRC comp with 350 grain woodliegh RN at 2200fps. I have taken a couple of fallow deer and a fox with it. My #1 in 303 has just arrived and waiting to be shot. I did have a 458 win which I had recahmbered to 450 nitro, but during a brain fart I sold it. Still regret it. Ben, I have followed your adventures with your 450-400 very closely. Great stuff.
Let us know what you choose Grant.

Ok, lots of ideas. However, I'm also considering rechambering a #1 for either .470 NE or .577 NE. I figure the ground squirrels and coyotes here near Las Vegas are a tough breed so I really want the .577.

Question is, how much work to rechamber to the much larger caliber, and what #1 action would you start with - rimmed cartridge- 45-70, or does it really matter? I know a rebarrel is needed too, so that has to be figured in, along with sights, rib, hospital money for broken shoulder, etc.

I've owned a 458 Lott in #1, but, as I said above, the coyotes here are V. mean.

JD Jones ( http://sskindustries.com/ ) used to rebuild Ruger No. 1 rifles in 577NE, but I can't find one on his website anymore. My understanding is that a fair amount of work is involved, as the action supposedly must be opened to accommodate the width of the cartridge. However, I've never seen one, and am only parroting what I've read.

The 9.3x74R works well on the hogs that I shoot. By the way, how do you cook a camel?

I had a .500 NE built by Hamilton Bowen . It was a great shooter and he did great work on it. It was his opinion at the time that a full .577 (750 grain bullet) was too much for the #1 action. I know that he built some " black powder/light nitro .577" on #1 actions !!! I took mine to Africa once and it worked beautiful !!!! I saw my gun a couple of weeks ago for sale at Champlin's if anyone is interested ? Not sure what they want for it. I still own a 450/400 3" they built for me , in my humble opinion this is a much better choice for the #1 action (jmo).

Bob, what did you shoot in Africa with your No.1 .500NE? Can you tell us some stories?

Ben,
With the .500 I shot 2 Giraffe's !!! I remember both of them like they were yesterday. We were hunting in the Southwest corner of Zimbabwe just north of Bietbridge . I was hunting with my best friend and PH John Hunt. We had been looking for an old "stink bull" to try the .500 on. We were tracking an old bull when we came around a "kjope" and he was feeding under an acacia tree. We made a stalk on him and got up about 50 yards away , I got on the "sticks" and settled the cross hairs square on shoulder . At the shot he took one step forward and fell over ( broke both shoulders and exited ). I've killed a dozen or so Giraffes and that is the only one that fell over !!!!! ( I have used everything from 9.3X74R to a .600 on Giraffe , I call them the "poor man's elephant") Even properly shot they seem to run a long ways . I have never killed a Camel , but I am sure they are very similar. In fact the early explorers called the Giraffe the "Leopard Camel".
The other Giraffe was a special one as well. My friend's son Brendon Hunt was with us , I have seen him grow up in the "African Bush" and a finer young man does not exist !!!!! I told him I would buy him a giraffe if his Dad had another one on quota ? I talked to John about it and he reluctantly agreed to let Brendon shoot a Giraffe . The next morning we got up early in search of Giraffe . We were doing a bit of "Diesel Stalking" when we came around a corner and a mature bull was standing in the road. John tried to get me to shoot the bull , but I told him I had promised Brendon he could shoot it. So out the door went Father and Son , I watched from "cruiser" . John got Brendon on the "sticks" and he made what looked like a perfect shot . However, he pulled it a little (give him a break he was 14 and shooting a very light .500 NE with full house 570 grain loads !!!!) and just clipped one lung . The chase was on , John took the gun from Brendon and chased the Giraffe down and took a "Texas Heart" shot at it running away. The 570 grain Woodleigh went in just above the tail and exited out the front of chest !!!! Full penetration !!!! What a great caliber. Brendon and I sat on the Giraffe while Dad walked back to the cruiser to get the trackers and collect the meat. Brendon looked over at me and said " I'll remember this day the rest of my life..." Through very misty eyes I told him "I would too...". I have shot a lot of game over there , but not until my own son shot his first Wildebeast was I more excited !!!!! Truly great memories with the Ruger #1 in .500NE.
Hope I have not bored everyone with my tail ?
Robert

Bored? No way! Thank you for sharing that! Were those solids you were shooting the giraffe with? I think a giraffe must be at least twice the mass of the biggest camel.

Hope this dosen't sound silly, but on the subject of Ruger #1's, is there any cartridge that it can't be re barreld/chambered for in relation to the action etc?

Hey John,

When opening out receiver shoulders on a No.1, I have not had to when doing one to the 450 NE, but have always had to when going to the 470 or 500 NE.

Usually remove around 20 thou or so out of each side, but trial and fit, trial and fit is the way to go, as normal. Usually there will have to be a little taken out of the top of the block as well to allow the shell to clear it. Care is necessary here as the firing-pin gallery is under there. I have never broken through into that gallery, but if one was to do so, the block would be ruined.

Some No.1’s are a little “sloppy” compared to others, so one thing that I have occasionally had to do is gently heat and bend the block cam and re-fit as necessary to ensure complete downward travel of the block when the under-lever is fully dropped.

Once you have the shell nicely clearing the block top, the loading trough may need to be slightly lowered to match the block height. The relationship between the block height and the loading trough is fairly critical, if the loading trough is too high in relation to block, the shell won’t extract because the shell rim will catch on the bottom edge of the trough, and if the trough is too low the rim of the case will hang up on the back of the block when the shell is being loaded. All being equal, and with a decent safety catch, the shells should now load smoothly and eject cleanly.

Hope this helps and makes sense.

Best
ALEX

Hunter338

One of the many beauties of the Ruger No1 is its ability to safely chamber and handle (with various amounts of work) basically anything from 17 Ackley Hornet through to the 577 Nitro Express.

That said, my recommendation for a practical maximum in a No1 would be one of the 500's.

One in 577 could be a bit of a handful unless it was up to an acceptable weight (12-13lbs I'd guess) Even then at that weight it might be awkward to get it "feel" right in the hands ie. have the right weight distribution. I'd like the oppotunity to build one though, it would be fun.

Ben,
I loaded 570 grain Woodleigh solids in my .500 . I also put a mercury recoil reducer in the butt and a small one in the forend .Still a light "500" , but shootable. The more I think about it , I may have to try and buy it back myself ??
