Small & medium bore doubles - again!
      #178476 - 06/04/11 10:13 PM

I've owned two big bore nitro doubles and neither moved me like this gem. To me, this is about as perfect a double rifle there is - for $10K Round body top lever backaction sidelock H&H. Finished in 1896, re-chambered in 2003 to .35 Winchester 8.5 lbs. With a 250 gr. woodleigh at 2200 fps it should be a real killer. I plan on taking it with me to RSA this September.

That's a nice one for sure. It looks like a lot of fun too.

I love those old doubles with external hammers. I grew up starting my shooting with a single shot .22, and a .410 side by side with external hammers. Then a 12g with external hammers.

Something about them says to me, Africa, and Exploration, the smell of the African dust, an elephant about to stomp one ...

Mickey,

Yes it started life as a .303 and was re-bored to the .35 WCF around 2002. Excellent choice as very little metal was removed and the operating pressure is a bit less than the 303. It's very dainty. I can take my thumb and middle finger around the body and not touch the gun.

Funny how I came to own this rifle. In 2005 I started the double addiction with a Merkel .375 H&H, then after a couple of years was ready for a British pre-war double, but still really liked the medium bore double AND the .375 H&H.

Champlins had this in my price range and after researching the .35 WCF I snatch it. I sold the Merkel and this year was able to fund a left handed CFR .375 Dakota.

So perfect are these two rifles (IMO) that I'm selling off everything except my .458 H-1 tropical for a three gun battery.

It was bored and re-chambered in-situ by Cliff LaBounty. He did very few double rifles and now retired.

Around 1985 I was in Washington and paid a visit to him in, I believe, Maple Falls. He took me to his workshop next to his house and I watched him rebore a rifle barrel. He explained each facet of the process. I was impressed. The machine he used was amazing. He was very knowledgeable and friendly.

I remember reading that when he retired he sold his equipment and trained a replacement. Unfortunately, I don't remember who the new gentleman was or where he is set up.

Beautiful rifle and set up for another generation or two of use.
